Why Does Draw Tite Hitch for 2005 Dodge Durango # 75162 Have Higher Capacities than Vehicle

Question:

2005 Dodge Durango SLT. I originally bought the Hitch to use with a cargo rack and a small trailer, it has had no trouble hauling our four wheeler, go kart, and tons of other things back and forth from our home to our lake house on the trailer even hauled a Chevy 350 and Transmission with not trouble. I see the hitch is Class III rated at 600 TW and 6000 GTW, and I have found that the Durango is also capable of 7200 this Durango does have the Tow Package as well - My question is since this Receiver is bolted onto the Bumper and not Connected to the Vehicles Frame - it the Bumper able to support the same weight as the Hitch 600/6000?

Trailer hitches often have towing capacities that are just slightly higher than the capacity of the vehicle they are installed on. Since a towing capacity is only as strong as it's weakest link you go to with the vehicle's capacity as the overall capacity.

The towing capacity is more than just engine power and frame strength. You also have to consider the transmission's ability to handle the weight, the cooling power of the engine and the brakes.

Hitch manufacturers like to make their hitches to be a bit overkill and their ratings would be fore just the hitch by itself.
