Differences In Towing Capacities of 2016 Ram 2500 Diesel and 3500 Diesel

Question:

Looking to buy Ram 2500 Diesel for towing a 16810 lb fifth wheel thats the posted fully loaded weight - 13600 is empty. According the RAMs info the truck can tow but the payload is 2380 lb. The hitch weight of the trailer is advertised as 2860. all things being unequal this truck cannot safely pull this size trailer? At 25 of trailer fully loaded weight would be looking at a trailer not heavier than 9000lb? Is this correct or am it missing something? It seems incorrect thinking on my part as the truck can tow up to GCVWR of 25000lb. very confused. thanks

The new 2016 Rams with the Cummins diesel have incredibly high towing capacities when properly equipped. However, the 2500 models don't get the crazy high towing capacities. The best configured 2500 for towing can tow up to 17,980 lbs with payload of up to 3,990 lbs. But that is a regular cab, 4x2, long bed.

Now if you went with a dually, 3500, regular cab, 4x2 you have the insane towing capacity of 31,210 lbs. With a payload of 7,390 lbs.

If you went with a short bed 2016 Ram 2500 with the factory rail kit like most people do I would recommend an auto slider fifth wheel hitch like the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550034 so that you don't have to get out and activate the slider every time you get to a parking lot.

Then for a rail kit adapter you would want the part # DM6099.
