Where To Connect Blue Wire From The Tow Ready Wiring Adapter, # 20036, On A 1999 Chevy Suburban

Question:

I am converting a 4 pin plug on my 1999 Chevy Suburban to a flat 5 pin for my new trailer with your 20036 adapter. Where is the easiest place to find my backup light wiring. I have never taken off the rear light fixture. Is there any advice to getting to this wire? Also, I still have a 4 pin trailer. Can I just unplug the adapter to use the 4 pin as in the past? Thanks for your help.

The blue wire on the Tow Ready Wiring Adapter, # 20036, is spliced into the reverse wire of your 1999 Chevy Suburban with the included quick splice. The easiest place to connect to your reverse light is right behind the taillights.

You will want to gain access to the reverse light wiring that goes into the taillight assembly. On your 1999 Chevy Suburban if you open the rear doors there should be 2 screws located by the rear door hinge. One of the screws is high and the other is low. If you remove those 2 screws, but be careful not to drop the screws down behind the sheet metal, you should then be able to twist out the taillight housing.

Using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, you will then connect the tester to a good ground and while somebody is putting the vehicle in reverse, test the wires on the taillight assembly to determine which wire is the reverse light wire. Once you find the correct reverse light wire you will attach the blue wire from your adapter to this wire with the included quick splice.

I am sending a video link to the Tow Ready adapter being installed on a Kia Sedona. The vehicle is different, but the installation would be the same basic principle.

If you will be also using a 4-flat connector on a different trailer you will just unplug your adapter and unplug the blue wire and just leave the blue wire plug disconnected. Then, just use the 4-flat as you have done before.
