If you have a Reese 16,000-lb 5th wheel hitch you will just need to remove the locking latch on the handle with the jaws closed.

If you have a Titan 5th wheel hitch then you move the handle into the vertical position with the jaws closed.

Wither the jaws closed and the hitches in the appropriate position you can hook your trailer right up as the jaws will open for the king pin on contact.

On the Pro Series hitch like # PS30121 you'll rotate the hitch handle latch towards the trailer and pull the handle out completely until it latches in the open position (and the jaws are no longer closed around the king pin). At this point you can slowly pull away from the trailer. If you're having trouble unlatching make sure the trailer is as straight as possible. You might also need to put a bit more weight at the front so that the king pin is level with the jaws.
