Recommended Ways To Raise Height Of Small 4 X 8 utility Trailer

Question:

I have a Teske utility trailer 4X8foot with wooden sides VIN 5ERTM0810FM084538 with 12 inch wheels. I would like to lift the trailer 3 inches and put 14 inch wheels on to increase rear clearance when I lift and move the trailer by hand. The tongue does not extend high enough because the rear hits the ground and strains my back. Would shackles work? Since the rear of the leaf spring are not bolted down I suspect shackles on the front of the leaf spring would not work. Shackles seem easier than over under install. Thanks for your help

Since you do not want to use an over/under kit on your axle, the best way to raise the trailer would be to use longer hangers for the leaf springs.

You may be able to use a hanger like part # E4139. This hanger is designed for double-eye springs and is 4-1/4 inches tall. The old hangers will need to be cut off and the replacement hangers welded on by a professional. I have attached a link to our product page for the trailer hangers we offer you can check out.

If your axle measures 2-3/8 inches diameter you can use an over-under kit like part # K71-384-00. For a 3-inch axle the over-under kit is part # K71-385-00. The spring seats will need to be welded in place by a professional because you cannot just flip an axle. Axles have a slight bow and if flipped could cause issues with tire wear and trailer handling.

When you decide to replace the wheels make sure you choose the tire/wheel combo that will have enough clearance and has the right bolt pattern for your hubs.
