Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with Factory Trailer Hitch

Question:

Hi, I realize that the factory hitch is welded to the bumper, but i am also replacing the bumper. I need a hitch that can tow at least 11,000 lbs and a tongue weight of about 1,000 lbs. with that said, I am buying a new bumper. What hitch should I use?

The factory trailer hitch on a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 is not welded to the bumper but it is welded to a support beam that attaches the 2 frame rails so you would not be able to remove it. That is why I recommend a hitch designed to fit models that have the factory trailer hitch.

Check out Curt trailer hitch # C15409. This is a beast rated for 2,550 pounds tongue weight and 17,000 pounds gross trailer weight but still with a 2 inch receiver. I have linked a video showing installation for you.

Another option is B&W trailer hitch # BWHDRH25211. This guy is rated for 1,600 pounds tongue weight and 16,000 pounds gross trailer weight. In terms of capacity and cost this is the best option for what you need.

I have also included a link to our help article on choosing a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow a trailer level.
