Weak Brake Troubleshooting and Replacement Brake Assemblies for 7k Trailer Axle

Question:

I have a 2008 Carson equipment/car trailer with 8 lug 7k axles. I just bought it and thought the brakes were a little weak when i drove it home. How do I know which brakes to order. I am gonna replace the wheel bearings as well, so is their an easy way to tell which brakes i need to order. thanks

There are a couple things you should check before you would want to replace your brake assemblies.

I would check the main ground for the trailer. This is the wire that runs from the trailer connector to the trailer frame and provides the ground for the entire trailer. The ground strap may have come loose and now may not be strong enough to fully apply the trailer brakes.

Some brake assemblies are manually adjusted. They could very easily be in need of adjustment. You will want to have the adjustment screw tightened to the point where the wheel locks up and then back it off 10 clicks. Check out the video I attached at the 4:25 mark.

To pick out brake assemblies you will need to measure them first and determine how many bolts hold the assembly to the spindle. For a 7k axle I can almost guarantee you have a 12 inch by 2 inch assembly that uses a 5 bolt mounting flange. I attached a page that has all of the 7k assemblies we offer and they are all this type.

I would go with self-adjusting assemblies like the part # 23-465 for the right hand side and # 23-464 for the left hand side.

To replace the bearings will require you to get the bearing numbers off of the bearings in the hubs.
