If your new Ford F-150 came with the factory installed brake controller then you would not have to add an aftermarket one to activate the trailer brakes. If the truck does not have the factory controller and you need to control the brakes then you will need one.
For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885, because its easy to set up and use and it is reliable. You will also need the appropriate wiring harness to plug the controller into the truck. You did not mention the year so if it is a 2015 or 2016 then you would need harness # 22292. This harness actually fits 2009 to 2016 Ford F-150s. I have linked a video showing an example installation using this harness.
