Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 2010 GMC Savana 3500 Towing a 9k Trailer

Question:

Hi, I just picked up a 2011 Savana 3500. Ill be occasionally towing a 9000 lbs trailer with it. Im looking to help out the rear suspension a little in terms of sag and stability. There are a number of options you have between bump stop replacements, axel springs, leaf springs. Can you recommend an option? Ideally it affects the firmness of the ride the least when not loaded - as the Savana will be driven lightly loaded most of the time.

Actually your best option is going to be a weight distribution system. A WD system not only helps with the rear suspension sag but it also helps distribute some of the trailer's tongue weight up to the front axle of the vehicle greatly increasing the braking and handling performance while towing.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

If your trailer is going to weigh 9,000 lbs loaded the tongue weight will most likely be between 900 and 1,350 lbs. For a WD system great for that tongue weight range you would want the part # RP66130 with the shank part # RP54970. This system features the only sway control on the market that works to stop sway before it starts.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
