Troubleshooting Overheating Trailer Disc Brakes
Question:
can a friction sway bar cause overheating of disc trailer brakes?

I can't think of any possible way that a friction sway unit could cause disc (or any other type) of trailer brakes to overheat. I'd look toward electrical issues or mechanical issues with the brake actuator or brake calipers.
Check the connector on the trailer and the vehicle for damage or corrosion. Corrosion can cause power to bleed over from an adjacent circuit, and could cause enough power to be sent to the trailer brakes to cause them to drag slightly.
Faulty brake calipers could also cause the brake shoes to drag which would cause the brakes to overheat. I'd also recommend troubleshooting your electric over hydraulic brake actuator according to the owner's manual to ensure it's operating properly.
