We can help you with wiring instructions for a trailer brake controller in your 1999 Dodge Dakota that does not have the factory 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper. I have linked both a general wiring schematic and a helpful detailed article concerning brake controller installations.
Any controller you choose will install using our installation kit # ETBC7. This includes the 7-way socket, wiring, connectors and circuit breakers. For reference I linked a video showing the kit installed in a 2009 Dakota.
If your truck does not already have a working 4-pole flat trailer connector you will need to install one of these as well. I recommend Tow Ready # 118329 which you can see installed in a 1999 Dakota by clicking on the linked video. The is a simple plug-n-play item that requires no cutting or splicing of wires.
Once your 4-pole harness and ETBC7 are installed you can wire in any controller of your choosing. Among the most reliable and highly-rated units we offer is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This advanced proportional controller works with both electric and electric-over-hydraulic brakes, includes built-in diagnostics for troubleshooting and has a customizable display that is easy to read. It will slow your trailer in direct proportion to the braking action it detects in the Dakota, which delivers smoother handling overall. The P2 # 90885 delivers the same proven performance, without some of the convenience features included in the P3, at a lower price.
