Rear of Cab Clearance Provided By Reese Elite # RP30144 Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch on 2015 Silverado

Question:

Hi - I have a 2015 GMC 2500HD Denali 6.5 ft bed and want to pull a Wildcat Maxx 282RK 5th wheel 96In width. Im looking for an under bed mounted hitch. The BandW Companion slider looks good but is quite heavy. - will the RP 30144 and RP30868 system give me enough cab clearance for a 90deg turn? - what is the weight of RP 30144 and weight of RP 30868? Thanks for your help.

Whether or not you'll be able to make 90 degree turns will depend on how wide your fifth wheel is at the front, and the distance between the rear axle centerline and the rear of the truck cab. You'll need to measure the distance from the rear of the truck cab, rearward to the rear axle centerline. This will be a very close approximation for where the king pin will sit in the hitch jaw, with the hitch fully slid forward. Then, add 10 inches to that distance, to represent the 10 inches of rearward travel provided by the slider. If this distance is at least 52 inches, then you'll be able to negotiate 90 degree turns on flat ground.

The actual weight of the # RP30868 is just over 100 lbs. The hitch/slider unit, part # RP30144 weighs just over 200 lbs.

Another option would involve the # RP30922 fixed, non sliding hitch, the # RP30868 rails and a Reese Sidewinder. The Sidewinder would move the pivot point between the fifth wheel and the hitch rearward by 22 inches, which would ensure plenty of clearance between the fifth wheel and the truck cab, without needing to exit the truck to unlock the slider.

If you click the provided link, you can see an FAQ article that shows how the Sidewinder works. To determine which Sidewinder is compatible with your fifth wheel, look for the manufacturer and model number of the pin box, which should be printed on a sticker somewhere on the pin box. The
FAQ article includes a table showing which Sidewinder units are compatible with which OEM pin box models.
