how do you hook a 5 way plug to a 4 way. Do i need a brake light?

A 5-way from a trailer will attach directly to a 4-way like what is on the part # C55513 that you referenced. The fifth pin will just hang off of the edge of the 4-way and wouldn't be active.

If you are looking for an adapter to go from a 4-way on your vehicle to a 5-way you would need the part # 20036.
