Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty Towing 37-Foot Coachmen Chaparal

Question:

We just bought a 2015 ford 250 with short bed. We previously had a long bed and are using our current hitch. My husband is convinced that we dont need a slider because our rv has the 90 degree turning radius. I am wondering about this hitch. He wants one that pivots side to side. Will this hitch work with our existing rails?? Not the custom ford rails but the ones that came with previous reese hitch. Also, in looking at this hitch at online sites, I see reviews calling this an economy hitch and some feel it is cheaply made. We have a 37 foot Coachmen Chaparal with a dry weight of 10,000 pounds. But, I am not interested in cheap. I am interested in safety. Thank you for any insight you can give me.

If your 5th wheel trailer has a profiled front, with angled surfaces rather than sharp 90-degree corners, then you may not need a slider hitch for your 2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty with 6-3/4-foot bed. It certainly is possible to make low-speed turns with such a trailer without having to install a sliding hitch or Sidewinder pivoting pin box. You certainly CAN use a slider hitch if you like, for even better clearance for sharp turns. Your towing experience will certainly come into play here.

The Reese 5th wheel hitch # RP30047 that you referenced can be considered an entry-level item, but it is made by Reese who produces excellent products. The primary difference between a hitch like this and upmarket units is ride quality, rather than safety. This hitch does have a 4-way pivoting head which makes hitching easier when you're on uneven ground. It fits all industry-standard 5th wheel base rails from makers like Curt, Valley, Draw-Tite, Hidden-Hitch and Reese.

As you move to hitches that have a higher weight capacity than 16K you'll tend to find more substantial construction and enhanced features. For example, the Curt Q20 # C16130 features a 20K capacity, double jaws for consistent king pin contact and a cushioned 360-degree pivoting head for the easiest possible hitching. This unit carries a 10-year warranty.
