Can Kodiak Disc Brakes be Added to 3,500 Pound Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System
Question:
I am considering some modifications to my trailer to improve its fit to my mis-matched 1987 Supra TS6M Comp tournament ski boat. The previous owner of my boat mated the boat to a DLH double axle trailer intended for a wider and longer boat. Now I am considering shortening the frame, and possibly narrowing the frame as well, to improve the fit, and also hopefully improve the launch-ability and recovery of my boat. Several years ago, I retrofitted Kodiak disc brakes to the forward axle, and wish to keep this system intact. It appears, from your websites information, that both the Inner and outer bearings and races are the same for the both Kodiak 3500# disc hub and the intended bearings of part #ASR3500S04. What isnt clear is whether or not they share a common inner seal. If not, will I be able to find a seal that fits both the Timbren spindle outer diameter and the Kodiak Hub inner diameter? I am considering converting the trailer to a single axle to reduce costs. The original trailer intended for this boat was a single axle. The #ASR3500S04 is of course, a 3500# rated axle pair. I havent been able to determine the combined weight of my boat and trailer, So I am wondering if you have concerns about this axle choice? Unfortunately, It doesnt appear that any of the other Timbren axles featuring a 4inch ped spindle will share the same bearings with the Kodiak hubs. Can I custom order to mix and match spindles to suspension in order to get all of my requirements met? Thank you,

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Timbren axle-less system # ASR3500S04 using 10-19 seals, # RG06-050. All of the Kodiak disc brake kits for 3,500 pound axles use this same seal so you will be able to use the brakes on the Timbren axle-less system.
Assuming the combined weight of the boat and trailer is under 3,500 pounds then the axle-less system will work fine. To get some idea of the weight you can take the boat and trailer (as it is now) and weigh it at a truck scale or a place that sells bulk gravel might be able to accommodate you.
Different spindles only are not available for the Timbren systems so you would be limited to the 3,500 pound models.
