Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2008 GMC Acadia Towing a 2006 Forest River Surveyor

Question:

Hi, Looking for a suggestion for a wd hitch and sway control. TV is a 2008 GMC Acadia. TT is a 2006 Forest River Surveyor 235RS with TW ~450lb and trailer weight ~4500lb. We planning on taking shorter trips 100-500 miles and expect to get out about 3-5 times a year.

For your 2008 GMC Acadia and 2006 Forest River Surveyor at 450 TW and 4,500 GTW, the Reese Round Bar Strait-Line Hitch with Shank, # 66087, that you referenced would be a good system for this application.

The Reese Round Bar Strait-Line Hitch with Shank, # 66087, does come with the shank so you will not need to get one separately. It comes with built-in, dual-cam sway control that stops trailer sway before it starts. I have included a link to the installation details below.

Since the system comes with a shank, you would just need a ball. I recommend # A-90 (2 inch diameter), or # 19286, (2-5/16 inch diameter) depending on what size the coupler on the trailer requires.

With a weight distribution system installed, you will be near the threshold of what the available hitches for your 2008 GMC Acadia can tow. Most of the available hitches for your vehicle can accept 500 pounds of tongue weight and 5,000 pounds of gross trailer weight. So it will be very important to keep a close eye on the gross trailer and tongue weights of the trailer loaded and ready to tow. I have included an FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control that has a lot of good information.
