Installing a 4- to 7-Way adapter such as # 30717 is fairly straight forward. A factory 4-Way will plug into the 4-Way part of the adapter. Then you will ground the white wire to the vehicle frame. The remaining wires are black for 12 volt power, blue for output from a brake controller, and either yellow or purple for reverse lights. Any function not needed can be taped up and stowed out of the way.
Additional wire and connectors to splice in wires will be needed. I recommend duplex wire # 10-2-1 which is two wires, black and white, that can be used to go from the adapter to the front of the truck. You would want to change the number in the quantity box to the number of feet of wire needed. We usually recommend 25 feet.
For the 12 volt circuit you will also need a 40 amp circuit breaker # PK54540. For a brake controller you will need a 30 amp circuit breaker # PK54530 and a brake controller. I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.
I have included some links that should also help.
