Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2013 Ram 1500

Question:

I have a 2013 Ram 1500. I had a pilot brake controller installed at U-haul. The lights, all work, the manual slide engages trailer brakes with variable power input, the brake pedal does not engage trailer brakes. I notice they ran a separate wire up and spliced into the harness high up above. Whats missing here? Will this harness solve problem and will it work with a pilot? Dodge dealer says they have to flash the brain to engage a new device.....

The problem you are experiencing is due to the brake controller you had installed in your 2013 Ram 1500.

The brake switch circuit of your truck has too low of a voltage output to activate the controller. Your truck will only send 4-6 volts on the brake switch circuit and the Pilot # 80550 that you referenced requires a full 12 volts. This is why your controller will activate the brakes with the override lever but not with the brake pedal.

The only controllers we offer that are designed to work on your truck are Tekonsha proportional brake controllers like the P2 # 90885 and the P3 # 90195. Either of these will work well for you as they can be triggered with the lower voltage that your truck has on the brake switch circuit.
