Weight Distribution and Sway Control Recommendation for Somerset E3 Trailer
Question:
I havent been to a scale yet to know if I need one or not, but Im looking at weight distribution hitches to use with my Somerset E3 Tray. Its a GVWR of 3500 lbs with a currently unknown TW. Being an off road trailer, the A-frame is a bit different than on normal trailers. It is constructed with the coupler welded to an A-frame made of 2inch x 3inch boxed members. This is then welded under 2inch x 5inch boxed members. The upper member on the street side houses the wiring for the camper. Is this type of setup compatible with the attachment methods of the WDHs that you sell? Are there certain ones that I should be considering and others that I should be avoiding given my trailer configuration? As far as your or tool goes Ive been looking at ones that have sway control included, allow backing up, are compatible with electronic brake control, and use a 2inch hitch. Once I know the loaded weights and how close I am to the weight limits of my Odyssey I will narrow the search even further. Thank you for your time.

Based on your trailer's set up you will need to go with bolt-on chain hangers for Weight Distribution Systems, part # RP58305. These will bolt onto the side of the trailer frame. Attaching chains to the bolt on hangers is accomplished by hooking the trailer to the vehicle and using the trailer jack to lift the trailer and vehicle until the proper link in the spring bar chains can be placed on the hanger. Once the chain is attached, the weight is then lowered and the spring bars will distribute the weight. You will need to make sure you do not exceed 1400 lbs tongue weight or 14000 pounds gross trailer weight with this style of hanger.
When you calculate tongue weight you also have to add in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the 2012 Honda Odyssey. It is likely that when ready to tow, the tongue weight will be a little higher.
Once you know the tongue weight I will be happy to recommend a weight distribution system for you. I have included a link to our FAQ on weight distribution for you.
