How To Remove Broken Piece of Key From Lock Cylinder of Yakima Skybox Roof Mounted Cargo Box

Question:

I broke off the key inside the lock cylinder of my Yakima Skybox. I order the replacement cylinders and keys part # Y07202 from you guys but I have no way to remove the cylinder with the key in it. There is nothing for me to grab to pull it out and the flat edge key will not go into the lock. The box is open and I can get to the backside of the lock and opener, is there anyway to remove the cylinder so the new one can be ed?

I've had this happen to me before. Removing the broken portion of the key isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it can be done if you're patient. First, flood the lock with spray lubricant so all the tumblers and springs will be as pliable as possible. Some folks have luck using a straightened out paper clip, but I find they're usually not rigid enough.

I'd recommend using a dental pick (available at a hardware store) to gently pull the key out by grabbing the serrated part of the key. Be gentle, because if you go too medieval on it, you'll have a hard time getting the cylinder out using the # Y8007835 change key. Once you get part of the key out, you should be able to pull it out with needle nose pliers. In the worst case scenario, you'll need to have a locksmith drill out the lock cylinder.

I wouldn't recommend trying to drill out the lock unless you've done it before. The idea is to remove enough of the center of the lock that what remains can easily be removed with a screwdriver and pliers. If you get too aggressive, you'll damage the lock housing.

Please keep me posted on how it works out.
