The waterproof outer shell quickly (after a couple months) developed small holes/cracks that slowly seep water in the rain. The bag therefore lost its water resistant feature. Otherwise the bag is easy to install, lightweight (compared to hard shell alternatives), and I found it reasonably easy to access, open, and close. Before the small holes, the bag was water resistant. I took it on a trip in the rain and there were no leaks.

I bought this just over a year ago. I travel full time pulling a travel trailer and have had the Thule Interstate cargo bag on the roof sitting in a Thule Canyon XT cargo basket. The reason I purchased this bag over others is that it doesn’t use soft PVC in its construction. Soft PVC has a demonstrably harmful impact on all living organisms and the planet, from its production to the final product. It’s toxic through and through. The Thule bag uses a TPE lining, which is much safer on every level. I commend Thule for using it. Unfortunately, after less than a year of use, this bag proved incapable of protecting its contents from rain. Everything inside gets soaked after a rainfall. The items I’d stowed in it, e.g. camp furniture, solar panel, are now secured in the cargo basket and exposed, because at least then they can dry out afterwards. I wish I could, but because of its inability to keep it’s contents dry, I can’t recommend this cargo bag.

I bought this for a trip going from southern CA to Eugene OR. We used this with our Honda Odyssey with factory side rails only. We used it for our luggage because we placed bicycles inside the cargo space in our van. I would say we used about 75-80% of the cargo capacity of the bag. Didn’t notice too much wind noise. The fuel economy seemed to drop 1 maybe 2 mpg. We averaged 70-75 mph. I think when you have headwind is where you’ll notice a drop, otherwise I didn’t see much change cruising around 65-70.
We also encountered heavy rain on the freeway once we were in Oregon. When we arrived at our destination, the contents in our luggage was dry, however the floor of the bag was moist.
I also have used this for our 4Runner when we go camping to store extra items such as a plastic tote bin, tents, and other small bags.

The straps work really well to secure the bag.
It is easy to set up and remove from the vehicle when not in use.
It’s easy to clean.

Only concern would be if you stopped over night at a hotel, there is no security to keep anyone from opening the bag. I suppose you could add a luggage lock to the zipper, but just something to consider…

So far this has worked really well and highly recommend this product.

The cargo bag has stood up to weather and hard use. No leaks, tears or broken zippers. Great product. Wish it were larger!

Holding up well to hard use. Great product

by:

I’ve used this bag on a few camping trips. Bag is very high quality, including zippers, canvas, and straps. The bag has so far shown no signs of wear. It’s easy to strap onto my 2017 Toyota Highlander, which only has cross bars and no side rails. Fits tent, 4 sleeping bags, 2 air mattresses, 2-4 pillows and a few extra items. My only minor gripe is the difficulty in loading while on top of an SUV. It’s like stuffing a pillow case on top of your vehicle.

by:

I have been very pleased with the luggage carrier I purchased. After a year of use, it has fulfilled all my needs and held up to expectations of being durable, weatherproof and ease of installation. Also, I remember the excellent customer service I received when making my purchase a year ago. A great product paired with outstanding customer service is why I definitely give etrailer a 5 star review!

by:

Great knowledgeable service. When the endcaps on my roof rack were not in the package they were sent very quickly.

by:

Amazing bag, it survived a crazy storm with cross winds; Everything inside was dry including two laptops. There was some moisture in the inside of the front of the bag but for that kind of storm I was expecting it to be worst. Two of my friends riding with me were going to buy a bag for their vehicles.

by:

The customer service at a e-trailer is fantastic I was in a time crunch and Teresa was able to get my order to me in 2 days. She was great ! Thule products rock built to last.

by:

Prompt service. Product exactly as ordered. Would definitely recommend e-trailer :)

by:

Traveled for approximately 22 hrs with this item through rain and wind, empty and filled to the max. Never leaked, held up great and is ready for another adventure!

by:

Yes! We are very happy with our purchase.
Thank
you!

by:

It’s still working great!

by:

The product was exactly what we wanted. In addition the response time from order to acceptance was spectacular--very speedy.

For the most part this is a good cargo bag. Easy to install and remove. Only issue is zipper has broken

by:

I've used this once and it met my expectations. We will use this rooftop bag once or twice per year. I have not used it in rainy weather so I cannot say anything about the water resistance. It seems like a quality item. The seams, zippers and fabrics are sturdy. It is a bag that straps on to your cars roof rack. It does free up space inside the car. Thule nailed it.

by:

Product is as advertised. At 13 cubic ft it is not big. It is easy to attach and rode securely for 1300 miles. It is not waterproof, but it does not claim to me. Stow in a small package when not in use.

by:

It fits perfectly between the cross bars of our toyota highlander. We did use a couple of bungee cords to help secure it, and it held up well from Texas to South Carolina and then back to Texas. In rain it did collect some water, but we expected that and had only put beach chairs and a foldable wagon in the cargo carrier that could get wet.

by:

We love our rooftop cargo bag. It fits perfectly on my daughters Honda CR-V and she’s used it many times to transport her things back and forth to college.

  • Will Thule Interstate Cargo Bag Fit on a 2012 Honda CR-V with a Yakima Roof Rack
With a Yakima roof rack installed on a 2012 Honda CR-V, the spread between the bars will be 32 inches. The length of the Thule cargo bag, # TH869, is 40 inches. The bag would have to rest on the crossbars, which is permissible, but it would sag in the middle some. Most of the roof mounted bags we carry are longer than 32 inches but we do have # RL100J86-B which is 25 inches long. Before mounting a cargo bag make sure that the bottom of the bag and the roof are clean to avoid scratches....

  • Kayak Carrier and Cargo Bag Recommendation for a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe with Factory Roof Rack
Yes, you can use the Thule Stacker Kayak Carrier, # TH830, on your 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe as long as the factory roof rack includes crossbars that run side to side. If your roof rack does not have crossbars, then I would recommend adding the Yakima Roof Rack, # Y00409, # Y00145, # Y03536 and # Y06006. These crossbars will attach to the flush mounted side rails and provide mounting points for the kayak carrier. The cargo bag that I would recommend for you is the Thule Outbound Roof Top...

The Thule Interstate Rooftop Cargo Bag # TH869 is listed as a fit for your 2015 Subaru Outback. For another option take a look at the Rightline Sport 2 cargo bag # RL100S20. This bag has 15 cubic feet of storage and it will fit a vehicle with or without any sort of roof rack. You can also use car clips, # RL100600, to avoid running the straps through the interior of the vehicle. I also recommend using protective pad # RL100650 to not only protect the vehicle roof but to also help keep...

The Thule Interstate Expandable Roof Rack Cargo Bag # TH869 that you referenced is designed to work on most factory and aftermarket roof racks. If you have a factory or aftermarket roof rack this product should work well for you. It is not designed as lockable, but with a couple pad locks from a local home improvement store you could lock the zippers. If you do not have a roof rack at all on your 2000 Isuzu Rodeo you could get a Cargo Bag # RL100S30 as this product is designed to work...

  • How Fast Can I Drive When Thule Interstate Roof Cargo Bag # TH869 is on Roof of 2009 Acura MDX
There really isn't a stated maximum speed that you should adhere to when the Thule Interstate Roof Cargo Bag, # TH869, is on the roof of your 2009 Acura MDX. As long as you have secured the bag to the raised side rails or crossbars on the roof you should not have any issues when traveling at the posted highway speed limits or for long distances. Just a couple of things to keep in mind. This bag can not be used on a vehicle without raised crossbars or side rails. When traveling long distances,...

On your 2000 Pontiac Grand Am 4 door the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack for Naked Roofs SR1004 was a confirmed fit but has been discontinued by the manufacturer. It has a mandatory fit location with a crossbar spread of 23.5 inches. It cannot be moved from the mounting locations to fit the Thule Interstate Rooftop Cargo Bag # TH869 between the rails, but because the bag is flexible, you can load your cargo between and over the bars without issue. This combination will give you the stability...

  • Will the Thule Interstate Cargo Bag Work On a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse
Yes, the Thule Interstate Roof Mounted Cargo Bag, item # TH869, would be best secured to the top of your vehicle with cross bars installed. Using cross bars to install the bag keeps the bag from sliding forward and backward on the vehicle when accelerating and stopping. I checked on cross bars for your vehicle and factory cross bars are the only option available for the rails that are installed on your vehicle at the factory. You would need to contact your dealer for these cross bars. Before...

  • Will the Thule Interstate Cargo Bag part # TH869 Keep Cargo Dry
I wouldn't recommend waterproofing spray for the Thule Interstate Cargo Bag part # TH869. As long as you aren't driving through a hurricane this cargo bag should keep your cargo dry as it is considered weather resistant. In order for it to be considered water proof it would need be able to be submerged and keep water out. You can also put your cargo in a plastic bag before putting it in the bag to help keep water out as well.

  • Does Thule Interstate Bag Fit in Thule Canyon Cargo Basket
Yes, the Thule Interstate Cargo Bag part # TH869 would easily fit in the Thule Canyon part # TH859XT. The bag is also water resistant which means in a light rain the contents of the bag would stay dry but a heavy rain would allow water in. Either way it's a good idea to wrap your cargo in a plastic bag.

  • Is Thule Interstate Cargo Bag for Thule Canyon Basket Waterproof
The Thule Interstate roof bag part # TH869 that can be used with the Thule Canyon XT cargo basket part # TH859XT is considered weather resistant. What this means is that it's going to keep the contents of the bag dry when it's raining but if you were to submerge the bag in water (not likely to happen when on your roof...) it would let water in. To be cautious we do recommend putting items that have to be kept dry in plastic bags as an insurance policy.

  • Will the Thule Interstate Cargo Bag # TH869 Work with Raised Rails on a 2009 GMC Acadia
Cross bars are recommended when installing Thule Interstate Expandable Roof Rack Cargo Bag, item # TH869. The cross bars keep the bag from sliding forward and back on the vehicle roof during acceleration and braking and protect the vehicle roof from damage by keeping the bag stationary when installed. If the bag were to contain heavy, rigid items, it could damage your roof. You could install crossbars to your roof. I was able to pull up the owners manual of your 2005 Saab 9-2x and they list a 100 lb roof rack capacity for your vehicle. I wouldn't recommend carry 100 lbs directly on the roof of your vehicle though. For a bag that is designed to fit vehicles with naked roofs as well as ones with roof racks you would want the Rightline Ace 2 part # RL100S20 which can carry up to 15 cubic feet of storage space.
