Video Transcript for Stromberg Carlson Step Assembly Stabil-Step Stabilizer Review

Zack: Hey, everybody. Zack here at etrailer.com. If you've been in any sort of camping situation with a camper, an RV, I'm sure you're familiar with the old steps that shift back and forth. You feel them dip down as they go in. This one is not too bad, but the owner wanted to get something to make it a little bit more stable. You can see I'm bouncing around a little bit there. Now, part of that is not having the stabilizers down, but Stromberg Carlson has this little piece right here that's going to act as a stabilizer.

It's a really quick and easy way to add a little bit of stability to the bottom of our steps. We can just slide this under and it's probably going to be tough to see, but all you do is you rotate that top and you can see how it screws up or screws down to get a nice stable platform underneath here.So we'll slide that underneath there, get that put in place. This step is automatic, so we're not going to be able to lift it up like some of the manual ones, but this is still going to be effective on both styles. You can see, we just rotate that until it makes contact with our step. And we're going to take a good amount of that play out of there.

So somewhat challenging with this particular set up here today, but if you had a manual folding step, this would be really easy because you could just lift that bottom step up and then put it in place. We'll just get that where it's making contact, and then we get an extra rotation there. We're going to take a lot of that play out of those steps. And with that in place, you can see I was moving the camper quite a bit before. I weigh a couple of 100 pounds. There's a little bit back and forth there on the sides, just because that's centered.

If you're worried about that, you could just pick up a second one, put one on each corner. I know that's what a lot of people do, but getting in and out of the camper, you can see it's much more stable. Everybody is familiar with that old set that we've been on, where it just immediately drops down. This is going to do a good job of cutting that down. Now, this works great for steps that sit a little bit closer to the ground, like on our RV here today. These are only at about six and a half inches off the ground, but if you have something that sits taller, Stromberg Carlson has a couple of other options.

This is the same design, it's just a little bit taller. So this works from about seven and three quarters up to about 14 inches, so that gives us much more range. And then they also offer a more permanent option. So this mounts to the bottom of our steps, and then you pull this pin and clip out, and it deploys down. However, you have it mounted on there. It gives us the same idea of putting a footplate down there and you can expand this. So this works from eight and a half inches up to 15 and a half inches. So these wouldn't work here today, but we've had these on some steps that sit a little higher off the ground, and they have the same type of stability that they had as this one down here. You can see this is going to be a nice steel construction as a black paint finish on it. I've scratched it up already, just using it here in the parking lot for a few minutes. If you use it on anything hard, like a parking lot or a gravel lot, you're going to scratch up the paint, but the material makeup of it is really strong. It has a nice four inch by four inch plate on each end, so that's where all that weight gets transferred out. So if you put this in soft ground, it's going to do a good job of spreading that out so we're not sinking down in if it was just a pole, just that center shaft there. But when we bring this out, you can see how this works. So you can see there's that threaded screw there. So taking this all the way up, it will come undone. So you want to make sure at its peak that you're at least threaded in a couple threads so it holds in place. That way it doesn't fall out. But it has pretty good distance there. So I'm going to take this all the way out as you can see there, and then I will bring it back in a couple turns. And we'll get this measured out right there. That's going to measure at just shy of seven and three quarters. And then you can also see the hole in each plate. Those aren't intended for permanently mounting. There's not a folding set of steps that I'm aware of, that you can attach this to and not interfere with folding these up. But what that allows you to do is if you're going to maybe be doing some more permanent camping, you could maybe drill a hole through your step, drop a bolt down through that to keep it from shifting if you are worried about that.I've also seen people attach this to a piece of wood that they have down on the ground, just to spread out some more energy. It all depends on however you want to use it when it comes to that. But here in the parking lot, we found that it worked out just fine, just leaving it alone. And then when I bring it down to its most compact version, we're at four and three quarters of an inch. So we've got a little bit of travel there. I think it works out best for these sets of steps that sit pretty low to the ground. It has a total weight capacity of 750 pounds, so that's a pretty significant amount of weight. It probably exceeds some sets of steps, so you definitely want to go with whichever of the two is the lowest. So if your steps only have a weight capacity of 500 pounds, you would want to follow that instead.Overall, I think this is a really nice, cost effective, simple way to add some stability to your steps. So if you're looking to just extend the life of a set of steps that's already fine, or you don't want make that investment or leap into a higher end option like the GlowStep Revolution, this is going to be a really good way to go. But that's going to do it for a look at the Stable Step Stabilizer from Stromberg Carlson.

Great

These stairs would get a five if they had built in stabilizers. They were easy to put in. It only took 1.75 hours. My brother helped me do the lifting and puting in the bolts. He drilled the new holes needed for the side L brackets also. The dogs do not like the new steps as I haven't got carpet on them yet.

by:

Works great on my step. Mounted it to give a larger base as seen in picture. Great communication and fast shipping from e-trailer!

by:

Worked perfectly. My husband has been trying to fix this step for ages and I came home today to find him smiling after he installed your product. Ordered another. Safer steps now too.

by:

Although I'm using the product to support an existing deck which is sagging due to stringers that are cracking due to ground shift, the Stabil Step it will work perfectly for my application. There is not a lot of clearance under the deck so the compact size and its adjustability plus the 750 lb load bearing capacity and powder coat finish for weather exposure are all factors which led me to choose this product.

The customer rep I dealt with was extremely helpful and the product was shipped promptly and arrived within 3 days of me placing my order. etrailer.com is a good e-tailer who has great customer service. I will definitely do business with etrailer.com in the future.

Extremely satisfied. Sag problem is gone. My contractor was skeptical but has now used the Stabil-Step Jack to solve similar problem for other customers!

by:

It does not work well for the steps on my trailer a 46ft toy hauler as they do not remain where you place it unless you were to bolt it to the stairs. The normal movement of the trailer allows the supports to "walk" causing them to lean over or fall out. These might be fine if you were going to stay at a single location for an extended time and bolt them to the stairs, and then you would want a couple more mounting holes

I reached out to the manufacturer and based on the information so far it sounds like the jacks are misaligned. Their suggestion is to unscrew the whole thing - it will come out - and just re-screw it back in like you would a bottle cap. Then be sure to leave 2-3 threads in the jack when using.

by:

So far, I'm not really impressed. We are considering doing what I've read others have done and mounting them to a board for more stability.

by:

The quality of this product is excellent. The height adjustment works well. For more stability I permanently attached the base to a 2 X 4. It is just right amount of extra support for the 4 step stair into our 5th wheel.

It has held up well with a constant use. Very pleased.

We have a Small 20’ RV trailer. This stops the shake when going in and out on the steps. Makes napping better.
Easy to use and adjust. We use it always.

Still using as a regular part of our set up.

by:

The weld of the all thread to the plate has the plate about 5/16 out of level. That's a lot in a 4 inch plate. Called about returning the item and it will cost me about 1/3 of the cost of the two jacks. Seems like a simple Templeton could have been used to get a 90 degree weld. Poor workmanship!!

by:

Heavy duty as described. I am using this for my 56" roller tool chest. It does not have casters in the middle so I am using 2 of these, one in front and one in back for additional support. That is not the intended use for these but it works great. I am glad that I found this item for sale. Much easier than trying to fit additional casters underneath a 550 pound tool chest. When I need to move the chest, just unscrew the jacks. Problem resolved.

by:

I wanted to use it to prop up cabinets in my garage that are only attached to the wall. Therefore the front of the cabinets are hanging without support. The struts were not easily adjustable (screwed upwards to actually raise the cabinet so it doesn’t do the job well).

by:

Super quality, installation was a snap (30 min two man job) and outstanding service from etrailer. I recommend ordering a pair of step supports, as the bottom step torques when used. This is to be expected due to the length of the extended steps. Overall, I'm 100% satisfied. Job well done, George!

by:

The bathtub in my travel trailer was constructed so flimsy that every time I stepped into the tub, I felt as I was going to fall through.

It had not been supported at all.

I used two of these to supports beneath the tub and they worked great. The adjustable size was perfect for the height I needed.

They arrived within a few days so all in all a good experience.

by:

We only bought one and when you step on the side of the step, it flexes. I would recommend getting two. One is pretty good but two would be solid.

by:

Thanks Greg for your help in answering my questions when placing the order. Each time I order from e-trailer the personal have been very helpful and pleasant. I have not been able to use the step stabilizer yet but look forward. Thanks again for your help. to its support of the entry step

by:

I needed these to help stabilize our 5th Wheel steps. They did exactly what I wanted, it took all the wobble and sway out of the steps and makes them feel much safer to climb. I did buy 2 and put one on each side under the bottom step. They feel more rigid and stable now.
Thanks

by:

Item well made for the money. I used them to support floor joist under an old house. (support, not jack up) They arrived super fast. I kept the company information because I want to do business with them again.

by:

Using with the new steps I just installed. Lift the bottom step and adjust this support to the correct height. Lower the bottom step and you have a very steady set of sets and it cuts down on rocking of the trailer.

by:

This was just what I was looking for to hold up my 250lbs capacity steel desk, that had broken off a leg. Contacting the manufacturer for a replacement part was like trying to break into Fort-Knox so I opted for this jack. Shipping was supper fast and the price was great. Replacing the broken leg on my desk was a piece of cake. Sure wish they had this in a taller size.

by:

After ordering a stabilizer jack I got an immediate email response and an additional follow-up email when shipped. The product performs superbly and best of all I got it a great price. This company is excellent.

by:

Works as advertised. Well constructed. Fits under the bottom step like a glove. Prevents the bouncy feeling on that bottom step. Would recommend to anyone with fold out steps-D.

by:

Suited my (slightly unorthodox) purpose perfectly! See included pictures. Very high quality product with great service from etrailer.com. Will be ordering more of these soon.

by:

I bought two of these, one for each set of steps. They are super solid and easy to adjust and place. They are so awesome someone stole them on one of our last outings. He, He. I'll be ordering them again.
