• How to Mount an Adjustable Trailer Coupler
  Adjustable trailer couplers are not going to mount to your truck; they will attach to the frame of your trailer. Some of the adjustable couplers, such as the Bulldog Cast Head # BDA2563C0317 come with the mounting hardware to weld onto the frame of your trailer. Others, such as the Demco # DM15791-81, come with the channel bracket # DM66134 and mounting hardware # DM6166 separately.   Personally I prefer the Demco Trailer Coupler # DM14976-52 with the composite handle over the Coupler # DM15791-81 with a metal handle. I feel it is easier to operate as it does not have the safety latch like you get on the metal handle. Since most trailers are always outside the safety latch tends to get some corrosion in the handle and can become difficult to open.   The Demco # DM12688-95 you've looked at would be a good choice. The 2 inch channel mount coupler is compatible with a 3 inch channel, and has bolt spacing of 2 inches on center. Demco is known for high quality products, you'll get years of service out of the coupler. With a 10K capacity it'll be a lot stronger than you really need, but whenever you're talking weight capacities and safety, a little overkill is a good thing. I've heard of absolutely no problems with the Demco Ez-Latch system....

  I went out to the warehouse and found that the thread of the bolts in the Hardware Kit # DM6166 you referenced is about 1-3/4" long while the overall length of the bolts is 2-1/8" which you can see in the attached photo.

  The Demco Trailer Coupler # DM12688-95 does install to a channel bracket using bolts like what we find in the Kit # DM6166. If you were looking for a bolt-on channel bracket then the part # DM13867-52 would be what you're looking for which fits 3" wide channel tongues.
