Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

This is my second hitch and harness, my car was in a wreck so I'm replacing the damaged hitch. This hitch is very easy to install and does the job well. etrailer provides great how-to videos and customer service.

Easy installation, clear directions, I would highly recommend. I was going to add a picture, but once installed you can’t see anything. Invisible except when using! Still wiring the trailer, will snap pic when all done.

Product got to my house quickly and I was able to install it quickly on my 2010 Hyundai Sonata. It was easy plug in. Does the job well. I’d highly recommend this product to anyone needing it. Easy to install. Does not take long at all! Thank you etrailer! I’ll be shopping again with you soon!

hitch mounting holes on bracket was a little off had to pull it in but nice finish, and wiring harness was easy plug and play.

4 hitches in 4 years, plus plug-in harnesses. Everything always fit and functioned properly. The installation videos are superb. A very painless and stress-free experience. Thanks

I put two new trailer light sets on my trailer and only one side will work. Both sides work with other wiring harnesses

Thank you for your review. It sounds like you are having a common ground issue. In most cases when some trailer lights work and others dont it is the ground connection on the vehicle side or the trailer side. You want to make sure the wiring harness ground connection is grounded to a clean bare metal surface free of dirt or paint.

by:

This is one outstanding product. There's no cutting and splicing of wires. Why didn't someone think of this before? It took far longer to remove the car's cover panels than to connect this wiring harness. Also, to my amazement, the instructions were specific to my vehicle, including pictures! I have just one problem with this product. It's connector doesn't make reliable connection with the trailer's connector. I have to wiggle the connectors and play around till all lights are working, and then I have little confidence that they will stay working till I get where I'm going. The problem is not on the trailer end because I never had any problems with the connector on the previous wiring harness.

2008 Hyundai Elantra

I have an old trailer that I use to take yard debris and other trash to service center for disposal. It does not need lights but thought it would be best. Wow, the kit sent was like so easy to install. Everything fit and everything works great. Navigating the website was as close to perfect as I have seen. The amount of helpful materials was way beyond just what was necessary. Great job by everyone. My second purchase here and both were equally impressive.

by:

Worked well for my 2007 Hyundai Sonata. I also purchased the Curt hitch receiver hitch and drawbar. All 3 of these Curt products work exactly as advertised and are holding up well after a year of normal use. I highly recommend them.

by:
2008 Hyundai Elantra

This wiring harness was installed in less than 15 minutes. The direct plug-in with no splicing is ideal for the DIY person. I will use it along with the Curt trailer hitch I also purchased from you. I would highly recommend this product to others!

by:

I love it. It fits very well and is exactly what I needed. I love how etrailer knows what fits your car and that they have install videos too!

Hyundai Sonata

I dreaded this part - installing the wiring. It was so simple. SO SIMPLE. And when I had my trunk panel off, I was able to determine that the jackwagons at my local body shop didn't tighten my trunk latch properly when they did some work - so this wiring kit helped me there, too. ALSO - It just worked. I plugged it into each tail light, plugged it into the trailer, and VOILA! Frickin LIGHTS! To be easier, I can only imagine chucking the unopened package at my unopened trunk and having it install itself, via some obscure nano-materials interaction process. But that's just silly. I'm keeping an eye on it, just in case - but man - what a good product for a good price.

by:
2010 Hyundai Elantra

I watched the video and started the installation. It took less time than it said it would. Only thing I ran into was do NOT put the white ground wire to a bolt that is on the tail light assembly on the inside. I had a back feed to the trailer lights so both lights wound blink when turn signal was on. Ground it by screwing it to the body inside the trunk and it will work properly.

by:
2010 Hyundai Sonata

This wiring harness was simple! Unlike other harnesses I've seen on the market (where you have to splice and reconnect wires) this kit was plug and play ready...couldn't have been much simpler! It also came with zip ties and adhesives for the 'extra organized' ones out there!

by:
2008 Hyundai Sonata

Well made video made this a very easy installation. I haven't used this wiring harness yet, so I can't comment on it's actual integration with the vehicle and trailer or it's longevity. All items seemed to be well-made so don't doubt it will last. overall a great experience.

by:

I have used this hitch and wiring harness extensively over the past year. Works great, great value.

by:

Second hitch purchased from etrailer, quality same as the first ,excellent. Installation proceeded without any big issues. A floor jack helped make a one man installation simple. Wireing revealed a faulty brake light switch.

by:

I was amazed at how easy it was to install both the hitch and the wiring harness. The total job took 2 of us less than 45 minutes to complete.

by:

This was much easier to install than I thought. Here's their video. Made life a lot easier.

Product is still working great. Had never come loose and still feels as sturdy as when I installed it.

by:

Arrived in New condition. My garage mechanic installed it with problem, and it's been great for carrying my bike hitch for hauling four bikes around.

by:
2013 Hyundai Sonata

First, I would like to say that I received this product quickly and promptly. Furthermore, the communication was phenomenal. After opening the package and looking at the harness, I could tell this was going to be very easy to setup. Took a little time getting the panels in the trunk off, but once I did, everything was simple. One thing you will need to do is have a good ground. Either utilize the sheet metal screw is included and ground or sand an area to remove the paint. Ease of installing is 1 of 5 (very easy). Product reliability, not sure yet since I haven't actually taken it out on the road. Will recommend this harness and any other harness this company makes to anyone. No splicing or cutting, ease of installation is what you need, here you go.

by:

The wiring harness was a piece of cake to install. It took longer to remove and replace the plastic panel than it did to plug in the connectors and route the wires.

by:
2006 Hyundai Sonata

The wiring harness for my 2006 hyauni sonata was very easy to install. It took me about 40 minutes from state to finish. Etrailer you are the best. Thank you

  • Why Would Stoplights and Turn Signals Not be Bright on Trailer Wiring
There may have been a slight weak ground that was allowing some of the lower power draw functions to still work. The grounds on both the trailer side and the vehicle side, as well as the grounds for all of the trailer lights will need to be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. A weak ground issue would show up as soon as there is higher power draw on the system. Brake lights light up brighter and require more power so that is when the issue showed up. Making sure...

Since the Tekonsha # 118557 and Curt # C56049 are powered by a connection to the battery and have converter boxes, there aren't any issues when using them with LED tail lights on your 2014 Hyundai Sonata GLS; you won't need to use any diodes or resistors to make your harness work properly to power your trailer lights. I do recommend using the Tekonsha # 118557 since we've found that the powered Modulite converters on these harnesses are much more reliable than some of the others available....

  • Trailer Brake Lights Go Out When Brakes Are Applied on a Trailer Towed by 2009 Hyundai Sonata
You will want to look at the grounds and wiring for the lights themselves. This sounds like a ground or short circuit issue. Trailer lights ground through the mounting studs unless there is an obvious ground wire. In either case the grounds need to be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. When you inspect the wiring, look for any nicks with exposed wire that could be touching the metal trailer frame. This would cause a short. I have included a link to our wiring FAQ...

Both the Curt # C56049 and the Tow Ready # 118557 would work with your 2012 Sonata.
