Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

I ordered this for my PT Cruiser and it went on with no drama at all--perfect fit, easy to install, and I've taken it on the road with no trouble at all. Very well made. One thing--if you don't have access to a lift, you might want to consider taking it to a shop and having it put on for you--especially if you're over 40 years old and installing the Curt hitch at the same time. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the design or the installation directions for any of the components--it just takes a lot less time and effort if you don't have to jack the car up on stands and do the limbo for a couple of hours. If you have a lift handy, I'd guess the install would take less than an hour total for both wiring and hitch. I'd also recommend holding off tying everything down until you've got all the wire run out, that way you can adjust things as you go. I also took a moment to plug in the jumpers on the assembly to the tail lights on my car and test my vehicle signal lights before hauling out the rest of the wiring and hooking it up to the battery and trailer. This verified (before I got too far into the job) that the module works and there's nothing wrong with your car's wiring (my PT is 11 years old and the plastic socket for the turn signal light is starting to degrade--had to replace it.) You wouldn't want to get everything all hooked up and then discover a problem--test as you go and you'll be fine.

Just installed the Curt hitch on my wifes 2001 PT Cruiser. Started that job on Saturday, then took a break, intending to finish it after watching the Jacksonville Jaguars-SF 49ers game from London. After watching the early part and realizing the Jags were going to get badly waxed AGAIN, I was feeling depressed, so I DVRd the rest and headed for the garage to work on the hitch. Completed the installation, having never installed a hitch before. It worked like a champ, I was satisfied, and my depression left me. Unfortunately, it appears Ill need an every weekend project to complete as long as the Jags are playing this season.Im now rehearsing what needs to be done in the wiring harness arena. Sounds like I can handle that also. Thanks for the encouraging comments.

I needed a new wiring kit because original kit's power converter failed such that car's tail lites were on 100% of the time; draining my battery overnite, twice, before I finally disconnected power from battery. Nothing else would turn off the tail lites. Several issues where replacement kit fell short of original wiring: no labeling on power conv module for leads; plug-in connectors were somewhat mis-shapen and were difficult to plug in to car's tail lite harness; orig kit came with pre-installed spade conn for batt wire to module, this kit did not, and since I did not run a new batt wire, had to splice new spade on conv to attch to existing batt wire; yellow wire to driver-side tail lite was too short so I had to splice in an add'l length of wire; finally, original kit dbl-sided tape mount of conv failed (and may have contributed to conv failure as it was bouncing around in tail lite housing), and new kit came with same, so I fab'ed a more permanent mounting bracket. Once all was installed, all my lites on car and trailer work OK.

by:

Easy install but you will need something to fish the wire from the right side to the left side through the bumper reinforcement. I used 2 coat hangers hooked together and it worked fine. Running the power wire to the front is the hardest part of the install and if you have a friend with a lift it would make it go much faster, but it can be done with ramps and a jack and jack stand. Took about an hour.

by:

This connector replaced a seven year old connector that had the power wire break inside the potting. Installation was completed in less than a half an hour. One connector did not lock into place but still provided an electrical connection. If installing for a first time, it will take longer to run the power wire from the battery and other routing other wires. Simply put, it works.
I also had great customer service from Courtney B as well as prompt delivery from the US Postal Service.

2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Good fit.

by:

all connectors and misc hardware was included to complete the installation. Nothing extra was needed. Two glitches haowever:
1. It's a good thing I watched a YouTube video before starting, because the instructions read backwards as to the starting steps. (You begin on the "passenger side", not the "driver's side")
2. The yellow wiring that crosses over from passenger to driver side is One Foot too short. Despite taking care to route it the shortest distance possible, I was just able to make the final connection to the driver's tail light, and therefore, not able to mount the module on passenger's side with the "sticky tape" supplied, as the module is too far down in the space to fasten to any surface. One more lousy foot of the cross-over wire would have made life, and the installation, much better. (the 12gauge wire that is routed forward to the battery had 2' to spare)

by:

Product went in quick and easy and works as it should. The only thing I would change is having a tab with a hole on the box so that it can be securely mounted to the frame. You have to run the long wire under the car to the passenger side towards the front of the vehicle to avoid crossing the exhaust but it works out well with their being an extra spot in the plastic clips that mounts brake lines to the undercarage. It keeps it looking neat and you don't have to worry about the wire dragging.

by:

Yes I did get the package for the trailer wiring harness. I bought one a while back and it went bad so I bought another one and it has gone bad also. And that is why I bought this one. Not very happy with the quality. It seems the controller goes bad inside.

by:

Directions that came with this harness were useless, but I did find the video on the web site very helpful. I installed this on a convertible, not a sedan as shown in the video, and could not run the wire from one side to the other the way the video shows, due to an obstruction in the area behind the left taillight. It took several tries to find a route for the wire that worked, due to the yellow wire being about 6" too short. Because of this, it took me several hours to install, a lot more time than I expected. A few extra inches on the harness to the left taillight would have made this job much simpler.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Lights Blinking on a 2006 PT Cruiser When Pluged Into Trailer Harness
It does sound like there is either a short in the system, or that the 2006 PT Cruiser is not equipped to power both the trailer and vehicle lights. I know that the 2006 PT Cruiser models would require a powered converter like the custom-fit wiring connector we offer, part # C55532. This allows the trailer to pull power from the vehicle battery instead of directly from the tail light circuits, and prevents overload. I would recommend installing the # C55532 if your current 4-Way wiring...
