Requirements to Tow Mobility Scooter Behind 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Question:

can I carry ANY kind of trailer or hitch on my 2001 PT Cruiser ? I have a Victory Pride 3 wheel scooter and cant afford to change cars. Ive been told no, but I googled it, and saw pictures where it had been done. Thank You

Based on my research, you can tow a trailer with your 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, but there are several warranty limitations. The owner's manual I found states to never exceed the gross axle weight rating of your vehicle because of the added weight of the trailer hitch's tongue weight or cargo weight.

In order to comply with the vehicle's warranty, the following requirements must be met:
-The max. frontal area of the trailer cannot exceed 20 sq. ft.
-If your vehicle has a manual transaxle, it must be started in 1st gear.
-The trailer tongue load must be considered as part of the combined weight of occupants and cargo and should never exceed the tire's load rating.
-The "D" range can be selected when towing, however if frequent shifting occurs while in this range, the "3" range must be selected.
-Do not attempt to tow a trailer while using a compact spare tire.
-Whenever you pull a trailer, regardless of size, stop lights and turn signals on the trailer are recommended.
-The automatic transaxle fluid and filter should be changed if you regularly tow a trailer for more than 45 min. of continuous operation. Check the automatic transaxle fluid lever before towing. Extended driving at high RPM should be avoided to prevent excess heat generation.

I strongly recommend checking your owner's manual to confirm this information.

If you do decide you want to pull a trailer, I recommend using the Draw-Tite Class I Receiver Hitch # 24759. This hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle. The pin, and clip are included with this trailer hitch but you will need a ball mount. You will not want to exceed your vehicle's capacity, but this hitch has a 200 pound tongue weight rating and a 2000 pound towing capacity.

You could use a trailer like part # K2MMT5X7. To power the lights on this trailer, you will want a wiring harness like the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C55532. The # K2MMT5X7 trailer uses a 2 inch diameter hitch ball like # A-90. This trailer does not have a ramp to load the scooter, so you will want to find or fabricate a ramp of some kind to assist in loading the scooter.
