overall, a quality product, and reasonably easy to install. In the installation instructions, it warns to not loose the rectangular "bolt holder" inside the frame rail. well, I did. (totally my fault) This brings up my only gripe which is that replacement spare parts are not available from the retailer, or apparently the maker of the hitch. The only solution was to have a machine shop make one... time consuming and not that cheap. So don't be like me...lol

2006 Ford Explorer

I installed the hitch without much problem, although I did have to cut a little metal from one of the frame braces to get the hitch to clear.

Whithout triming, the brace prevented the hitch from slipping between the frame rails. I only had to notch about 1/4" of metal off. It took me 10 minutes with a hacksaw and angle grinder.

Apart from that, I had no trouble and the install went smoothly. I even found fishing the carriage bolts through the frame was really pretty easy!

The hitch looks to be well made. All the welds are smooth and even and the unit is niclely finished in gloss black. I'm not sure if it's a painted finish or powder coated though.

I installed this hitch to pull my little motorcycle trailer. The factory class II receiver was too high and I couldn't find a hitch that dropped low enough to get the trailer flat.

With the new class III, it sits lower than the factory receiver, also there's a ton of options for drop hitches available. With this new hitch it was really easy to get my trailer level.

So if you have a vehicle and need a hitch, I'd say buy this one!

It fit perfectly all parts were in the box with instructions. I found it easier to install it with the bumper removed.trying to get the bolts and washers in place with the wire feeder was not going well so i removed the bumper and everything went smoothly 1 hour to complete. Needs to come with bracket for wiring harness to be mounted

2006 Ford Explorer

Had this installed on my 2006 Ford Explorer. It took 2 men about 30 minutes. It is doable, but a tight fit. I have not used the hitch to pull anything yet - but it looks solid and am happy to have it instead of the old hitch. Price was considerably cheaper than any local parts store. Thank you etrailer.com

Package arrived on time but damaged. There were scuffs all over the hitch, but nothing major. Installation was fairly easy. Basic hand tools and a floor Jack, and I was able to complete the installation alone.

by:
2010 Ford Explorer

Perfect fit on my 2010 Explorer and very clear instructions. Fishing the rear mounting bolts through the frame is the most difficult part of the installation but it’s not impossible if you make sure the hitch is lined up with the frame holes properly.

I tow a salt water boat regularly and have zero complaints about the hitch I installed last year. Very sturdy and no noticeable corrosion yet. Highly recommend.

A year later and I am still happy with my purchase. 24 years of doing art shows, I downsized a bit to a Ford Explorer. Love my vehicle but not quite enough room for the "extras" I need. Purchased a cargo basket 6’x24”. This hitch easily holds it plus tent parts, etc. This probably doesn’t say much about the hitch itself, but am happy with it! Oh yes, found a local place to install it. Easy peezy!

2007 Ford Explorer

Great product. Came in five days with free delivery. Easy to install. So easy I did the installation myself. Only problem I had is the frame had to be grinded down on one side a quarter inch. This was done because a small lip prevented a good fit.

Package arrived on time and in perfect condition, even though the box was heavily damaged! Installed quickly and easily! Good purchase!

Hats off to etrailer and Curt Hitches!
I
watched the installer video to be sure I could do this. It seemed so simple a middle schooler could do it.

Then I quickly ordered the hitch online, it was shipped the next day, arrived by my favorite carrier, UPS, and I had it unwrapped and my Explorer up on ramps in no time at all. (You don't need the ramps, I just used them 'cause I got 'em. Makes me feel manly!)

I read the directions, then re-read the directions, then used the wire fishing tool, and had my bolts in place in 20 minutes max. My daughter helped thread the lock nuts for the first two carriage bolts, and then I threaded and snugged everything up.

I torqued it all down tight, and I am good to go. I have not used it yet, but let me comment on the quality:

-the powder coat is heavy, hard, strong, and durable (I had another Curt hitch and I know this to be true)
-the fitment was a little tight, which was GOOD because it held the hitch in place while I threaded bolts. I did beat the hitch into place the last half inch (with a baby 2.5 lb sledge and a block of wood to protect the finish).

The installation could not have been any easier. It was a piece of cake!

If you have normal tools, a normal brain, and a 1/2 inch torque wrench, you can put this sucker in!

I would put one of these on every truck I buy, if it needed one.

I highly recommend etrailer for lights, connectors, hitches, and like products. Their customer support is polite, helpful, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. Their tech videos are clear and professional, and their technical support crew really know the products and their proper installation.

You don't need to look anywhere else, and NO, I didn't get paid anything from anyone to write this! I have used this company for years, with zero complaints, and I am a tough sell!

It fits like it is supposed to. I get why Ford made the cute little 1-1/4” hitch integrated into the bumper. But if the v8 Exploder has a 7100 pound tow rating, why not make it the 2”? Gotta love engineers

The ordering process couldn’t have been easier. Was delivered quickly. And when it was delivered it was 39degrees outside and I thought why not install it. Went outside and in under
An hour was installed and looking good. Thanks!

This product was extremely easy to install. The overall apperanceof the hitch is great and now I can haul my camper with the explorer. I had an 1 1/4 factory hitch and with this product now I have a 2". This has given me the capabilities that I needed with my vehicle. Thanks so much for the help and Etrailer.com will be recommended to all my friends.

I have a 2006 Ford Explorer that came with a 1 1/4" hitch and I used an extension to convert it to a 2" hitch for a small utility trailer. I found the Curt hitch to fit my needs, (using a new sway bar hitch) with a good price from etrailer and it was shipped quickly. The detailed videos showed me exactly what to do for installation and the tools needed. I was able to install it by myself in my driveway but it would have been easier with another person. All in all, it came out very well and I am quite satisfied with the quality and results.

Excellant retrofit hitch for my 2007 Ford Explorer which came with
a 1 1/4 " hitch. Installation was no problem and took about an hour.
I have 2 hitchs now , on which I placed the oval L.E.D. brake light in the upper 1 1/4 hitch and a drawbar with 2" ball in the lower
2" receuver. Really works well.

the trailer hitch was overall built good except for the upper passenger side mount was a little out of place when they welded the square reinforcement on the mounting hole so the hole didnt line up i had to find a 1/2 drill bit and drill to open the hole up but after that it went together fine

by:
2006 Ford Explorer

Hitch arrived on time. Cardboard packaging was pretty beat up due to steel parts poking through during shipping. Item was in good shape and looks sturdy.

Took me about an hour to install the hitch. Very easy but I suggest watching one of the install videos for a few tips. Installed on a 2006 Ford Explorer EB 4X4 4.0L

Depending on how this holds up, I may purchase a front hitch as well.

by:
2010 Ford Explorer

The hitch came very quickly and was simple to install. I did it by myself in about 20-30 minutes. The wire bolt holder was the trick to fish bolts through the frame. Love my hitch.

by:

Easy to use website, shipped in a timely manner and installation videos were very helpful. If I ever need another hitch I would not hesitate to order it from etrailer.

by:

Product cam as described, installed easy. A tip to anyone installing this hitch follow directions closely and have a magnet handy to retreive lost bolts/backer plates inside frame rails.

  • Recommended Ball Mount for a Mercury Mountaineer With 1-1/4 Inch Factory Hitch
I do have an option for you but I think we first need to verify that we are indeed looking for the correct rise/drop amount in a ball mount. In order to verify that we have the correct rise/drop needs we first need to measure from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube on the trailer hitch and then subtract from this the distance from the ground to the bottom of the coupler on the trailer while level. The above calculations will then give us the correct rise/drop we need...

All of the aftermarket trailer hitches for your 2006 Ford Explorer fit beneath the factory 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch.
