Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk or cargo space, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will need to remove some interior trim or carpeting to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed within your trunk or rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Wiring harness install was easy. This is my fourth or fifth vehicle I've done this type of install. Viewed YouTube Etrailer for install video.

2017 Mazda 3

I have a 2017 Mazda 3. I ordered the product because I was hesitant about splicing into my car’s wires. This wiring harness made things a lot easier. I watched a YouTube video to get a quick idea of how to do it. The only thing I did different was I ran the wire which connects to the battery through the inside of my car. The wire runs from the trunk, easily squeezed between the rear seat, tucked into the floor panels by the doors, goes up near the driver side, through a small pre-existing gap in the body and to the battery. No drilling though the firewall, no need to go beneath the car. See photos for reference.

Still works great. Got exactly what I paid for. Extremely satisfied!

Mazda Protege5

My second hitch purchased from etrailer for a Mazda hatchback (first '02 Protege5, now '15 Mazda3). Both good experiences.

Very easy hitch install, the inclusion of the fish wires for the frame hanger bolts is a stroke of genius. Don't be afraid of the exhaust isolators, just spray some soapy water and support muffler with a jack or strap. If you can change a flat tire then you can work a wrench well enough to do this in an hour.

'14-15 Mazda3 has a couple of things making wiring easy to integrate. There's a grommet in the left rear quarter floor that's perfectly placed. Just trim some electrical tape to allow an opening, clip the new connector near the lighting adapter & reconnect inside after fishing from outside. I ran power neatly along driver's side rocker & out through the firewall. It's both easier and less vulnerable, just fish one more wire through the mass that exits above the driver's left foot. (Just DO NOT use anything sharp, you don't want to nick any wires and short something out). Finally the battery on my car already had several open connections to use right at the positive terminal, each protected by a fusible link no less! (See photo.) All I needed to add was an M6 stainless nut to connect the new wire.

Only a couple of minor downsides:

Aesthetically this is one of the uglier installs, mostly because the 3's huge muffler is right against the rear valence, leaving no room to tuck anything out of sight. My Protege5's hitch was entirely hidden except for the receiver. Here, unless you're willing to butcher your bumper cover (assuming there's a hitch made to fit that way) you're stuck with what you see in my picture. I saw the round-tube alternative on another similar car and it looked a little better, but that one requires support straps for a rack with any carrying capacity.

Design-wise I ran into one surprisingly annoying thing the first time I went to insert my drawbar. The hole in the receiver for the hitch pin is set really close to the hitch frame, and there's a gusset plate on top, which leaves basically no room for the clip that secures the pin. My existing clip didn't fit at all until I ground the ends a little. The clip that came with the new hitch sort of fit, but only jammed up against the hitch so hard that it scratched right through the protective powder coat. Weird in a product from such an experienced manufacturer, but easy to rectify.

All equipment was delivered on time. Hitch, wiring harness, receiver and ball. Watched video's on installation of harness and hitch. Went down to my garage and installed both with the help of my girlfriend. Very satisfied with the products and the installation. etrailer supplied the goods and the knowledge. I am very happy that I went this route.

Hitch installed easily on my 2014 Toyota Corolla.
Wiring had poor instructions in the box but the video posted on etrailer’s site answered my questions.
No issues and everything worked.
Thanks.

Great product. This is my fourth one from etrailer. A bit more difficult to install. Had to think up some way to hold it up singlehandedly, but managed it. See attached picture.
Will deal again with you in a flash.

by:

Well it worked

by:

The harness works great once installed. Printed installation instructions were general for many vehicles and woefully inadequate . On my Mazda 3 wagon I ended up drilling a hole through an internal body panel and lining it with a rubber grommet for the wire to pass through rather than running the wire between the tail light assembly and its receptacle(?) in the body panel as instructions indicated. The foam lining around the edge of the receptacle was thinner than the wire and I'm sure the wire would have been crushed between the tail light assembly and the edge of the body panel opening, and eventually short out.

Still works fantastically, I haven’t used my trailer much during the winter, however during the fall it was still holding up quite well. I still highly recommend this product!

2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser

Installation is a little tedious due to tight spaces to get to existing lights. I do not understand the purpose of requiring a power source. I have stalled other wire harnesses in the past that just connect to the existing lights and on your way.

Etrailer Expert

Patrick B.

7/30/2015

The purpose of the power feed is to isolate the power draw to a dedicated line. This way, if there is a short on the trailer the subsequent overload happens on the dedicated power wire, blowing the fuse, and preventing over-draw on the vehicle wiring. If the trailer lights got their power through the vehicle tail lights power, then a short on the trailer would over load those circuits potentially damaging the vehicle wiring or lights.

Mazda

This wiring kit was purchased for installation on a 2017 Mazda 3 sedan.

As received, the installation instructions made no reference to any Mazda 3. There was reference to a Mazda 6 with incomplete instructions and pictures. The company web site offered no further clarification.

I am an automotive engineer with an electrical background and the installation was far from obvious. Wire color codes did not match the car harness. The power wire to be routed to the battery was black. Vehicle power is usually red. The fuse holder and its wiring to be atttached to battery plus was yellow. The power wire leading into the control module was red. So, we have a yellow wire connected to a black wire, connected to a red wire. What a mish-mash!

I finally called the manufacturer and spoke with a customer service representative. He was not able to help immediately but took time to find the right information and called back.

Once the install information was received, the installation went reasonably well with the most difficult part being the routing of the power wire forward to the battery. To protect the wire and install it securely, I removed the plastic undertrays and routed the wire alongside some fuel or hydraulic lines. As mentioned by other users, more ty-wraps would have been useful. I used some from my existing supply.

After install, I tested the function with the boat trailer and it appears to work as designed.

2014 Volkswagen Passat

My third hitch from etrailer: 2000 VW Passat, 2006 Mazda 3 Sedan, now 2014 Mazda 3s GT. In all three, the plans and fit-up were excellent. For the 2014 Mazda 3s GT, I bought the 24914 Draw-tite hitch, with 3493 draw bar and 19256 ball. With the standard chrome exhaust tips, I had to lower the muffler for the hitch mounts to clear the exhaust. This was the most difficult part -- windex for lubrication and a strong grip pulled off the four rubber muffler hangars, lowering the muffler on a floor jack about 6". The hitch then fit perfectly to the mounting holes, and the part metric, part SAE hardware provided was high grade and correct. Fishing the mounting bolts through the frame members was the simplest part. Tightened nuts, raised the muffler, and then lubed and pushed on the hangars again. Done in about two hours. Four ibuprofen in anticipation of sore muscles. Nothing new. Top of the draw bar at the hitch is at 11" from the ground, putting the drawbar top at 13-1/4".
I installed the 118405 wiring harness without problems, choosing to route the power wire for the switch "converter" along under the interior trim under the doors and into the interior fuse box compartment, then into the engine compartment by a single hole punctured through an existing rubber nipple just above the wiring feedthrough on the firewall. I changed the ring connector to a 1/4" ring connector to match the existing 6 mm post on the Mazda battery terminal block (thank Mazda for the ready-made posts for accessories). Works!
Once again, etrailer gave me all I needed in one shipment, and everything fit as planned. No problems pulling my lightweight sailboat trailer and utility trailer. Another satisfied customer!

2004 Mazda 6

Good product. Good price.. a little ghetto how the light wire for the trailer needs to hang out of the truck when using the trailer but that is normal for the car. After a year it works well the wire sit fine in the truck seal and never gets a cut in the wire which I was afraud of.. great set up and I would recommend it to anyone for the price.. I use the wiring and hitch on a Mazda 6 with a large 10 foot trailer and it works great.. oddly the car even handles the trailer well. Very happy

It's nice to have plug and play wiring for a trailer hitch. The install was easy after watching an installation video on the etrailer website. The paper instructions aren't that great but having a video to watch made that insignificant. The most difficult part was running the power wire for the module up to the front of the car. Being a new car the underside is covered with plastic covers front to back. Had to take the covers loose to run the wire above the covers so it would be protected. This was installed on a 2018 Mazda 3 sedan with LED taillights.

2014 Mazda 3

Running a wire to the battery is not an easy install!

I was hoping for a plug in play solution for my 2014 Mazda 3. This was highly rated as a great solution and a fairly easy install. I did not read well enough or watch the video because it is easy until you need to run the wire to the battery. Without a lift, that is not easy to do and took a few hours.

The good:

Easy to plug into the lights in a 2014 Mazda 3 without removing the tail light. Seriously, don't do that. It's not needed. Just take the lining out on the driver's side to get easy access.

The video of the install is helpful but don't mount the device under your car. Keep it in the trunk where it can be protected. Then you are only feeding one wire out through a gasket. You can keep the trailer connector in your trunk.

The bad:

The instructions are useless. Throw them away. They probably don't even have your vehicle listed. Watch the video instead and modify those instructions for you use.

Splicing and crimping required! Make sure you have a crimping tool. Makes this much easier.

The connectors are horrible. Go buy 12-10 waterproof connectors that you can heat shrink. I couldn't get the wires to stay in the connectors after crimping them. They would pull out easily. The video even says to use different connectors.

Routing the wire from the back to the front was not an easy task and took hours to do. The hardest part is figuring out how to run it under the car and protect the cable and then doing it while working an a very confined space. A lift would make this much easier.

Conclusion:

Not the easiest to install but doable by someone who has some mechanical ability. If you have access to a lift, definitely use it to run the cable to the battery. Expect to use some choice words when working on the run to the battery if you don't have a lift.

by:

I was very impressed with this trailer hitch. the quality the ease of installment and wiring harness. The hitch held up just fine for the past year, I would recommend this to anybody. I use it often to pull my 12 foot boat and my utility trailer and it’s only a 1 1/4 hitch on my 2015 Toyota Corolla.
Thank you for a great product

Company is easy to deal with and offers quality products at competitive prices. The instructional videos should make the installation much easier.

  • How To Tell If Lights On 2015 Mazda 3 Are LED Or Incandescent
You can find out if you have LEDs a couple of ways. The easiest is to remove the lens of the lights and if it has a bulb it is incandescent. If it has diodes then it is LED. Another way is to turn the lights on and then watch as you turn them off. If the light go off abruptly, they are probably LED. If the filament takes a moment to go out then it is probably a bulb. The third way is to contact your dealer with the VIN and they will be able to tell you what lights are on your Mazda 3.
