  • Does Installing Brake Controller in 2009 GMC Sierra Require Disconnecting Factory Controller
  • No, the factory brake controller in a 2009 GMC Sierra does not need to be disconnected in order to install an aftermarket controller like the Prodigy P3, part # 90195. You do need to find the blunt wires under your truck's dash to connect the P3's wires to, as well as run some 10 gauge wire, part # 10-1-1, back to the 7-way from the brake controller harness. I've linked an article and a video on the installation for you.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller not Working on 2006 GMC Sierra
  • There are a number of troubleshooting steps you can undertake in order to try and determine what the issue is with the brake controller on your 2006 GMC Sierra To test the brake controller itself, sever the blue wire a couple inches from the back of your controller. Then use a circuit tester such as # PTW2979 to test the end of the blue wire coming out of the controller. It should only have power when you apply the manual override; if it shows power at idle then there is an issue with...

  • Hopkins Brake Controller Wired and Installed but no Power on a 2009 GMC Sierra
  • There are some wires in the engine bay that need to be connected to complete the system. They provide power to the unit. There are a couple of wires, one is usually red and tucked on the side of the power distribution box, the other is usually black and can be found under the brake master cylinder. They need to be connected to the power posts on the power distribution box. I have added a link to an FAQ article we have that walks through the process, with photos.

  • Troubleshooting A Curt Venturer Brake Controller That Is No Longer Working
  • Per the instructions for the Curt Venturer Brake Controller, part # C74VV, a blinking red light means there is a brake overload or a short. The probable solutions listed for this is to confirm the brake maximum load of 6. If that is not the issue, then you will need to locate the short and fix it. If you find no short in the system, the controller may be bad. You will need to test the wires at the back of the brake controller for proper input and output. The red wire should only have power...

  • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Jack That Does Not Function
  • If all fuses/circuit breakers in your truck are good and the trailer's jack wiring is too, the first thing I would check is the power switch on the jack. If you can access the jack motor terminals directly and apply 12V power direct from a battery, bypassing the switch, then you will be able to determine if the switch was damaged when you experienced the short. If the motor works when directly powered then you know the switch needs to be replaced. If the motor does not respond to direct...

  • Platform Bike Rack that is Rated for Use at Rear of Motorhome
  • The most similar bike rack we have to the Thule T2 part you referenced that is approved for the rougher ride quality at the rear of a fifth wheel trailer is the Yakima OnRamp part # Y36FR. The T2 was not reinforced enough to be able to withstand the harsher ride at the rear of the fifth wheel but the OnRamp was and comes with added benefit of having a ramp setup built into it to make loading and unloading easier. I attached a review video for this rack for you to check out as well.

  • LED Headlight Bulbs Flickering on a 2010 GMC Sierra
  • If you have installed LED headlight bulbs in your 2010 GMC Sierra and have experienced flickering bulbs or a delay when switching between the low beams and high beams then you will need what is referred to as an anti-flicker harness. If you purchase the Putco F1 Series LED Headlight Bulbs part # PF1-H11 which are a fit for your Sierra, the anti-flicker harness is included. Our load resistors like # DI34ZR are rated for 50 watts and most headlights are 55 watts so they wouldn't work. I...

  • Troubleshooting No Power at Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1996 GMC Sierra With Factory Wiring
  • It sounds as if there may be a fuse blown in the under hood fuse box. Remove the cover to the power distribution box under the hood and check the tow package fuses to be sure they are in good working order, if not this is most likely the problem. The 1996 Sierra did not come with a pre-wired 7-way connector but the wiring was ran to a point behind the rear bumper. As far as I can tell all of the tow package fuses are under the hood in the power distribution box fuse panel. I have not heard...

  • Why Would Trailer Brakes Lock Up in Rhythm with Blinker Circuit
  • The problem is that someone either ran your brake light/blinker circuit to the brake output circuit of your vehicle 7-way, or the two circuits have shorted out together. I attached a diagram that shows how a 7-way should be wired up so that you can clean up the wiring of your vehicle.

  • Troubleshooting Curt Echo Not Powering Up on 2011 GMC Sierra
  • It sounds like the 12v power source of the 7 way connector on your 2011 GMC Sierra may not be receiving power, which would cause the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 not to power on. I do recommend you start by checking your fuse box to make sure that there are no blown fuses that correspond to the towing functions. The fuse locations will be right next to the power posts at the front of the power distribution box. I am including a video link to a Prodigy P2 brake controller being...

  • Troubleshooting Left Turn Signal Problem When Using 7 to 4-Way Wiring Adapter PK12716 on a 2006 GMC
  • To determine where the problem is occurring, I would use a circuit tester to check for function at a couple different points. You will either need to leave on the turn signal in the cab of your truck, or have a helper operate it for you. We offer circuit tester # PTW2993 if needed. First, without the adapter or trailer connected, you can make sure that the left turn signal is reading correct at the 7-Way plug on your 2006 Sierra. The left turn signal is normally located at the second blade...

  • Tekonsha Voyager XP Brake Controller Installed On A 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Not Engaging Brakes
  • There are a few tests you can do first before you go replacing your Tekonsha Voyager XP. In your truck cab sever the blue wire several inches from back of the brake controller, and use a circuit tester # PTW2993 to check for power on the back of the unit when the brake pedal or the manual override is engaged. If there is power to the controller at idle, then that is indicating that there a problem with the controller and will need to be replaced. You can reconnect the blue wire and...

  • Troubleshooting 12 Volt Accessory Trailer Wiring Circuit Not Active on 2003 GMC Sierra
  • Under the hood of your 2003 GMC Sierra there is a fuse box on the driver side. There is a fuse and a relay for the 12 volt power circuit of the 7-way which you've determined has stopped working. Check the fuse box diagram on the lid of the box or in the owners manual and you'll see which fuse is related to the 12 volt trailer wiring circuit.

  • Location of Trailer Running Lights Fuse on a 2008 GMC Sierra
  • From what I found you're looking for fuse # 25 in the underhood fuse block. It's labeled "Trailer Park Lamps". If that doesn't fix it clean the trailer connectors on your truck and trailer and make sure they're clean. The running lights are in the 11 O'clock position on the truck and the 1 O'clock on the trailer. You can also test the pins on the truck's connector using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993. If you have power there then the problem is on the trailer and you'll need...

  • Troubleshooting Car Trailer With One Wheel Locked Up
  • I'm sorry to hear your trailer wheel is locked up! My recommendation is to jack up the trailer and remove that specific wheel and drum. You may need to loosen the brake adjuster first to be able to get the drum off. My guess is that either that brake assembly suffered a mechanical failure causing it to lock up and stay locked up or there is corrosion that has caused that brake shoe to stick to the inside of the drum which can happen if the trailer sat for long periods of time. If when...

  • Correct Pin Weight to Reduce Chucking on a 5th Wheel Trailer Pulled by a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500
  • If the pin weight (the weight pushing down on the 5th wheel hitch) is too high or too low, more than 20 percent of the gross trailer weight or less than 15 percent, it could cause the see-sawing problem you are having. The pin weight should be 15 to 20 percent of the gross trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow. You can reduce the pin weight by moving items within the trailer further back away from the front of the trailer or increase it by moving items forward. I have included an FAQ...

  • Troubleshooting Tekonsha Voyager Saying 0.0 When Pressing Brake Pedal In 2013 GMC Sierra
  • I would be happy to help. Since your Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 says 0.0 when applying the brake pedal on your 2013 GMC Sierra that means you are getting no power sent to your trailer brakes. Now there are a few causes, and since you mentioned that the manual override works properly then that rules out a faulty controller. Either the controller is connected to the incorrect stop light switch wire, or the stop light switch on your truck is bad and needs to be replaced. Trace the wires...

  • P2 Brake Controller Shows No Trailer Connected with Trailer Connected to a 2004 GMC Sierra
  • The 2004 GMC Envoy uses a different installation method than the 2004 GMC Sierra. So you did the installation correctly. GM for some reason does not make the full connections on trucks with the factory tow package. There may be some connections that you will need to make under the hood and, if not, then you will have to run a wire manually from the brake controller blue wire to the back of the 7-Way. I have linked a help article that covers the under hood connections. If you need run...

  • Primus IQ Trouble Shooting Brake Output Power Only When Truck Lights Are On
  • It sounds like there is a short in your wiring when you turn your lights on. It is pushing more power to your brake output wire. I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the cold side of your brake switch (red wire). If there is a draw there, then the switch or the ground wire are the issue. The solution is most likely a bad ground, so you will need to check when your lights are on as it won't appear when they are off. The first ground I'd check is the ground to the...

  • Prodigy Brake Controller Shows SH and oL Error Codes on a 2000 GMC Sierra
  • The SH error does indicate a short and the oL indicates an overload condition. The first things to check and the easiest are the vehicle and trailer side connectors. Dirt and corrosion can cause this problem. Make sure the vehicle and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion at the pins and in backs where the wires attach. You can test to see if the problem is the brake controller or the wiring somewhere between the controller and the trailer connector. You can test the...
