Troubleshooting Curt Echo Not Powering Up on 2011 GMC Sierra

Question:

I plugged in the Echo Mobile to my trucks stock 7 way plug. The LED on the Echo Mobile did not light up and my phone/echo app could not find the brake controller. I cycle power a few times trying again everytime, tried connecting to it with truck in gear and park, and tow/haul on and off. I also tried it with my trailer connected through Echo Mobile, thinking maybe it needs the trailer plugged in as well to work, still nothing. My truck does power the trailer lights, but like I said, I cant seem to get the Echo to work and status LED never lit up. Is this an issue with the Echo unit and I should just trade it out for a new one or do I need to change some wiring on my truck?

It sounds like the 12v power source of the 7 way connector on your 2011 GMC Sierra may not be receiving power, which would cause the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 not to power on. I do recommend you start by checking your fuse box to make sure that there are no blown fuses that correspond to the towing functions. The fuse locations will be right next to the power posts at the front of the power distribution box. I am including a video link to a Prodigy P2 brake controller being installed on a 2009 Chevy Silverado. At the 5:05 time stamp on the video it will show exactly where the fuses are located.

If the towing fuses are present and in good working order, you'll next want to start by using a circuit tester similar to the # PTW2993 to test the pin at the 1 o'clock position (when looking at the front of the plug- see diagram) to see if you're getting 12v of power on it.

If you're not getting power, you'll want to first check the ground wire on the 7 way connector to make sure it is connected to a paint and corrosion free spot on the vehicle. If the ground wire is in good working order and you're still not getting power to your 7 way plug. Please let me know and I can give you a few more things to check. I've also linked an article on 7 way wiring in addition to the installation video that you might find helpful.
