Does Installing Brake Controller in 2009 GMC Sierra Require Disconnecting Factory Controller

does the factory controller need to be disconnected when this one is installed?

No, the factory brake controller in a 2009 GMC Sierra does not need to be disconnected in order to install an aftermarket controller like the Prodigy P3, part # 90195.
You do need to find the blunt wires under your truck's dash to connect the P3's wires to, as well as run some 10 gauge wire, part # 10-1-1, back to the 7-way from the brake controller harness.
