Hi Sam,
A trailer drum brake actuator cannot be used as a replacement for a disc brake actuator on a trailer with disc brakes. Reason being the master cylinder on a drum brake actuator does not send as much pressure through the brake lines as a disc brake actuator, so you won't get the correct stopping power for the disc brake's piston.
So you'll want to replace your disc brake actuator with another another one, depending on the capacity and hitch ball size you need. For example, for... view full answer...
The Replacement Master Cylinder Assembly for Dexter Brake Actuators - Disc Brakes # DX44FR is all you will need to convert it to a disc brake actuator. Once you get it installed you will be all set and ready to go. view full answer...
Trailer brake actuators like the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX56FR you're looking at are rated more for the brake type and not necessarily a specific amount of axles since it has to do with the amount of pressure the actuator pushes into the brake lines.
If the 4-bole mounting pattern and the 7,500 lb weight rating matches your trailer application then this is a great option for you! Otherwise let me know what you currently have and I'll be more than happy to... view full answer...
Hi Shane,
If you're not wanting to switch from a 4-pole to a 7-way then you'll have to use a surge brake actuator in order to activate the brakes. Hydraulic drum brakes operate at 1,000psi and hydraulic disc brakes operate at 1,600psi so it's important that you pick the correct actuator otherwise your brakes will not work. You could potentially swap out the master cylinder to be compatible with disc brakes but you'll need to ensure it's compatible with your specific actuator. The manual... view full answer...
Hey Susan, to swap your surge brakes to electric over hydraulic, you're going to need to change out your actuator and add a proper brake controller.
For an actuator I'd recommend going with the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes # HBA-10 if you have drums, or # HBA16 for discs.
From here, you'll need a brake controller. I recommend checking out the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. This brake controller will work great with electric brakes,... view full answer...
Hey Richard, thanks for reaching out!
The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 is a great option for a replacement actuator because it's a direct replacement for the common Model 60 actuators that were popular in the '90s.
I'm not exactly sure what model actuator your trailer came with but This one has the bolt holes measuring 3" apart on center and it fits a 3" wide channel tongue so if those specs match what you have then this will fit like a glove! view full answer...
I'm sorry we do not; the best we can offer is a replacement actuator with a 2" ball like the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX27FR for drum brakes or the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator with Electric Lockout # DX29FR for disc brakes. view full answer...
Hi there Rich; while it doesn't come with one, there is a way to add an electric lockout to the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Drop - Drum # DM8669112.
All you need to do is add the Reverse Lockout Solenoid for Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuators - Non-Bypass # DM11993. view full answer...
I do have an option for you but there is not a version of the Titan Zinc-Plated A-Frame Brake Actuator for trailers with disc brakes. The only a-frame trailer coupler we do offer for use with disc brakes is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Lockout part # DM8105422 so this is what I recommend. In order to use this coupler with a 2-5/16" hitch ball you will also need the Demco Trailer Coupler part # DM15791-97.
The Demco coupler will actually be an upgrade over the Titan coupler. It... view full answer...
What you have is a UFP A-60 drum brake actuator Philip so to replace just the inner member what you would need is the part # DX97FR and you'd be set. view full answer...
Hey Eric, there there would be no issue with using the Dexter Surge Actuator part # DX56FR with a trailer that has a single brake axle. view full answer...
Thank you for the pictures of your coupler. You are going to need to replace your entire surge actuator coupler as the A-50 is obsolete and we do not have any parts to repair it. We have the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX73FR which you can have welded in place of your current actuator. Or we do have the Dexter DX7.5L A-60XL Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX43FR which would be a better option since it will prevent the brakes from being activated when you drive in reverse. This... view full answer...
I do not see anywhere that you would be able to use a screw driver on the Atwood 84132 to activate the actuator. Instead you could simply use a 2"x4" as in the image below with the safety chains. Then when you push the top of the board in it would activate the actuator. view full answer...
This is an excellent question Brad. The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX83FR is designed to bolt to a 3" wide by 5" tall frame while the Actuator # DX27FR is designed to bolt to a 3" wide by 4" tall frame. This is the only difference between the actuators as they are both for a 2" ball and have a 7,500lb capacity for drum brake trailers. view full answer...
It sounds like you're looking for a brake actuator that fits a 2" ball for your 2017 Trailstar. The dimensions don't have to match up, although it is nice if they do. The important thing is to know the capacity you need and whether this is for disc or drum brakes. You also have the option of an electric lockout, manual lockout, or no lockout. If you have a 5-way on your trailer I'm sure you have an electric lockout. If you have a 4-way you probably have free backing brakes without a lockout... view full answer...
Hello Sylvain. The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-20 is designed to fit on a 3" wide tongue with mounting holes 3" apart on center. I do not have any specs listed for the Titan AERO 6000 disc brake actuator but as long as the trailer tongue is 3" wide with holes 3" apart on center, the # 099-175-20 will be a perfectly suitable replacement. view full answer...
Hi Doug,
If the tongue really is C-Channel and not a box the you'd likely need to first weld a piece of metal to fill in the gap on the open end for the new actuator to weld onto. You could go with an actuator like the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX63FR. You'd weld this to the top of the channel, but there aren't welding instructions included.
This actuator has a 7,500lb capacity, fits a 2" hitch ball, and comes with an electric reverse lockout solenoid so... view full answer...
Steve, to replace your old UFP A-70 actuator I recommend going with the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX33FR. This is going to be a direct replacement, is made in the USA, and will work drum brakes. view full answer...
Hey Ryan, yeah you're right TDE is no longer a thing and unfortunately we don't carry a replacement reverse solenoid for that actuator so at this moment your best bet would be to replace the entire thing with the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX56FR.
This actuator has a reverse lockout so you won't have the issue you're having now, and will work just fine as a replacement as long as you have a 3" x 5" straight tongue trailer. If you don't then you'd need to let... view full answer...
As long as the steel lines are in good condition, then yes you will be able to reuse that portion of the brake lines on your trailer. You will want to look at a kit like the Hydrastar # HS381-9067 as it will come with the actuator, a 7-way connection and junction box to terminate the wiring and a breakaway kit since you will have electric actuated brakes.
We do have the Brake Line Kit # HS496-152 if you decide you want all new brake lines otherwise you should only need 4 of the Hoses... view full answer...
