Recommended Weld-On Replacement For An Atwood 82541 Surge Brake Actuator

Question:

I have an Atwood 82541 weld on actuator with a bad master cylinder drum brakes w/lockout. The trailer tongue is C channel 3 wide x 1 tall extending 5 from A-frame. This doesnt seem like much room to weld, but is how it was made back in 1986. Is there an actuator you could recommend? Does it have weld instructions? Im hoping I can find one that allows me to weld on outside and partial inside edge to get as much weld length as possible with the limited tongue size.

Hi Doug,

If the tongue really is C-Channel and not a box the you'd likely need to first weld a piece of metal to fill in the gap on the open end for the new actuator to weld onto. You could go with an actuator like the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX63FR. You'd weld this to the top of the channel, but there aren't welding instructions included.

This actuator has a 7,500lb capacity, fits a 2" hitch ball, and comes with an electric reverse lockout solenoid so that you can back up the trailer.
