An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

2010 Chrysler Town and Country

I drive a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country and tow a pop up camper. In addition to that I also carry my wifes 200 lb power chair in the back of the van. Needless to say the back end of my van was bottomed out. That caused the front end of the van to be up in the air thus giving me less control of the front wheel drive vehicle.
After installing a new set of shocks and the Timbren rear suspension on my van What a difference it made. I was a little concerned about the price but the results outweighed the price by a longshot. Now with my wifes power chair and the pop up hooked up, my van sets perfectly straight and my vehicle has better control making the trips a lot safer. The best thing is, I did it all myself and saved a ton of money on labor.

what shock did you install on the back?

Harvie

Thanks for the question Luc. I used Monroe Sensi Track shocks. They also have built in springs to aid your suspension and will automatically sense your load. Best part they are reasonably priced for the shock you get.

Put these on my dodge caravan. No more problems with the rear sagging when I tow my trailer.

by:
2010 Chrysler Town & Country

Installed this on my family's 2010 Town & Country. I was considering installing load-leveling shocks, but opted for these instead. I rather the weight of a trailer/cargo carrier be on the axle then the shock supports.

Installation was simple and straightforward. Like others, I opted to disconnect the shock at the bottom mount than the top. It took me about 30 minutes per side, excluding tire removal and jacking up the vehicle.

Suggestion... use a hydrolic jack to lift the axle a bit if you have a tough time getting the bolt connecting the shock to the mount. Do the same to reinsert the bolt when reassembling.

The jury is still out on performance, however, I'm sure it will do fine based on other reviews.

I attached some before and after pics.

2015 Dodge Grand Caravan

The Timbren rear suspension system replaced the worthless Dodge rubber suspension bumpers. Now when I pull my trailer the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan runs smoothly. No more rear end sag ! Easy to install ! Well worth the money.

Dodge

Easy to install on our 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan; instructions were spot on. Had for a year and they definitely help with sagging in the rear when we have the camper on, and when the camper isn't connected it rides as comfortable as before. Happy I bought them!

2016 Dodge Grand Caravan

Received my product on time. Product was just as described and were easy to install myself. We haven't hauled yet but did hook up to see how it looked and it seems to have made a big improvement on the rear suspension on our Grand Caravan.

I've always trusted etrailers products and pricing so I recommend them all the time.

Its been a year and they are holding hump well. Rides a little bit stiffer but we have a ton more control when hauling and the rear doesnt sag as much as it used to.

2012 Chrysler Town and Country

This product did exactly what I needed. Fairly easy installation which easily added 500lbs payload to my 2012 VW Routan. Fixed my squat issues when towing my boat. Great load leveling solution for Routan, Caravan, and Town and Country vans.

2013 Chrysler Town and Country

I have a 2013 Chrysler Town &Country that I load down with a roof and a rear rack storage. I was having issues with the rear sitting so low that I couldn't see the top of the rear tires and would occasionally bottom out. Now that these Timbrins have been installed I lose about 3/4 of an inch ride height compared to the 3+ inches I was losing before. It's still a little too early to determine if I'm completely satisfied, so I'll try to provide an update after traveling from Houston to Michigan and back during the holidays. The ride is definitely more firm(when loaded down with the extra storage), which is to be expected, but wouldn't call it jarring. The wife and kids will let me know soon enough. ;)

One thing to note about the installation video linked by etrailer in regards to these Chrysler/Dodge minivans... I don't have access to a full vehicle lift, so I had to use a coil spring compressor to pull the coil springs, which is not a big deal because they can be rented(for free with some places) from your local auto parts store. But, they don't just pull out like the video suggests. Also, as others have recommended, disconnect the shock from the bottom, NOT the top. I'm not a mechanic, but not a complete novice. I experienced a few hiccups from following the etrailer video, but was able to work them out with the right tools and patience.

One year update: We have taken two lengthy1000+ mile road trips in our 2013 Chrysler Town & Country with roof and rear rack storage and all we can say is the Timbren suspension upgrade is simply awesome. Our van no longer sags in the rear when loaded down and the suspension changes are practically unnoticed, especially when the van is not loaded at all. I highly recommend this suspension upgrade to anyone who plans on towing or loading up their Town & Country with extra weight.

2009 Dodge Grand Caravan

While these seemed a bit pricey for just "rubber bumpers", these "rubber bumpers" did deliver as a great suspension enhancement and were well worth the money. They installed very easily (just like the video) on my Dodge Grand Caravan. (The only thing I did different was to remove the lower bolt on the shock since it was much easier to get to than the top bolt.) They also performed excellent. With no load or a light load the van drives and feels normal (i.e. no adverse effects) and with a medium-large pop-up trailer the back end of the van sagged very little and it drove very stable. It sagged much less and drove more stable than the OEM parts with lesser loads! My experience is based on driving 3800 miles pulling a pop-up and the family to Yellowstone. Great product, service, and shipping speed from etrailer.

2013 Nissan Quest

Very good addition to my quest for good towing. Easy to install with a little work. Video from etrailer was exactly right. The spring was a little difficult to get back in place but I pushed the axle down an inch below its natural hanging point and got it in.

The suspension system performs perfectly. I replaced the shocks as well and have a great ride even when 6 adults are in the van.

2014 Dodge Grand Caravan

I bought these hoping they would solve my problem.....and they did. When I loaded up my 2014 Grand Caravan along with 2 bikes on the trailer hitch mount to head south to Arizona on an early December morning in the dark, my headlights were shining up in the air. Although more than I wanted to spend there were not many options available with such a simple install. Thanks to the detailed video and instructions, the installation went without a glitch. My headlight are now shining on the road in the dark and I can feel the added stability.

by:

Installed this on my 2009 Caravan because when I had a hitch mount 4-bike platform rack hanging off the back and was loaded with camping gear and family, the rear suspension was terrible, it would bottom out, and my headlights pointed up so that everyone would flash their brights at me. New shocks helped, but did not solve the problem. This product did fix the problem and I am very happy. I was concerned about the feel when the van us unloaded, but this has not been an issue. I highly recommend this product.

by:

I attached my pop up camper to my hitch on my 2012 Chrysler Town and Country. I was very concerned because the back end of the minivan dropped so low and the front looked like it was doing a wheelie. Lol! I read about these timbrens from etrailer and still had questions. I contacted etrailer by email and they responded fairly quickly. My question was, "Would I need to buy anything else to go with the timbren?" Items like, load adjusting shocks or heavy duty coils. The rep. said the only thing I would need to purchase was the timbrens and it would correct everything. I was skeptical but the rep. was correct. I couldn't believe my van stayed level. This product is amazing and I highly recommend them. The tutorial videos made the installation easy. Thank you so much for those videos!!!

Have not driven yet, just installed. Added Monroe coil-overs as well, thanks etrailer.

2015 Chrysler Town and Country

Installed these on my 2015 Town and Country about a year ago. I had awful sag towing a popup trailer (350lb tongue weight) even though the T&C is rated for 500lb tongue weight. The trailer would sometimes bounce enough to drag the bottom of the hitch on the ground.

Installing these completely solved the problem. Greatly stabilized towing and I don't notice them at all.

I thought about installing them myself as many others have done, but I found a local shop to install them for about $120.

by:

ETrailer, as usual, delivered promptly at a very fair price. The installation video made it possible for me to do the job. As usual, Dodge's design made the job a bit more difficult than expected. The shock absorber takes an 18mm socket and most socket sets skip that size. My 3/4" socket was just a bit to big to do the job without damaging the bolt head. Watch out for the brake lines that run next to the nut on the back side of the shock absorber bolt. lt took two of us to spring the axle down far enough to get the coil spring out. Alone, I could swing the axle down or move the coiled spring, but not both. I had to use a screwdriver to lever the OEM spring bumper out of it's mounting but the Timbren unit slipped into the mounting socket smoothly and with two of us, the spring went back in place easily. It took us double the expected time to do the job but we did it without a lift or the nice air tools a pro would have used. Now the test will be to haul a loaded trailer.

Ford Five Hundred

We ordered the bump guards for my handicapped transfer van. I have a power wheelchair that weighs three hundred pounds without anybody in it, with my body weight we are pushing five hundred. This additional weight was killing the suspension of the van. These news guards raised the body, tightening the suspension and made for a safer and more comfortable ride. They prolonged the life of the van as well.

2006 Dodge Caravan

This product is an absolute must have if you plan on towing anything other than a lawn and garden trailer. I recently moved from DC to Tampa, FL by way of a two week stopover in MS. I towed my 5x10 trailer loaded down with 2 dirt bikes, 1 CRF50, misc other stuff as well as a van load of kids, dogs, and some other belongings.

This product completely eliminated all swag and there wasn't one hint of trailer sway. Most importantly, the ride was fantastic with no bouncing or any other ridiculous behavior. These things even smoothed out that section of 59 that runs from north GA down into MS.

I know they are pricey but please do yourself a favor and buy this product for yourself, especially if you're going to be towing with family in the van. Their saftey could dempend on it.

My Grand Caravan was pretty low in the rear with luggage and four of us on a trip. After the install, very simple, no more sagging and I have to be careful not to overload. Changed the handling for the better too, no more sway in the curves.

2008 Chrysler Town & Country

Other than getting them delivered to me, these are just what they say they are. I have a 2008 Crysler Town & Country. I put my pop up camper on my hitch and it looked like it was going to hit the ground "with the van empty! So I got these and put them on. It holds my van upright and dosn't affect my ride. I love them, they work great. I had shipping problem and etrailer took real good care of me. they made shure i was sadified! Thanks Etrailer for everything! Super Costomer Suport!

2012 Dodge Grand Caravan

This item took me about 1.25 hours to install on my 2012 caravan. I appreciated other reviewers making in known that an 18mm socket is helpful, and a 18mm wrench would make it even easier to remove the lower bolt from the shock. Two jackstands and a jack were used. One side required me to leave the car up on a jackstand and use the jack to push the axle down to get the shock in and out. Once in, I am simply shocked at the improvement in ride, handling, and cornering. I now regret buying a weight distribution system after pulling my new 24 pontoon over 1.5 hours of hilly southern wisconsin farmland because these did the trick without it fabulously. Shame on dodge for not making this standard equipment. Ten stars. Also see my review on tranny cooler.

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country Towing a Pop Up Camper
Basically, rubber springs are ideal for vehicles that carry the same load frequently, like towing a pop up camper. Air springs are better for trucks that carry different sized loads and thus have to level the bed side to side. As far as longevity, rubber springs are essentially one part which means less to go wrong. They are made to last the life of the vehicle. With air springs you have the air bags themselves, the lines, fittings, more components that means a greater chance that something...
