Video Transcript for Hopkins Vehicle Lights - Replacement Bulbs - HM20101VA Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM20101VA. This is the Hopkins Backup Alert, replacement 3156 Bulb with an audible alert. That's to add safety while in reverse. You can replace your tail light backup bulb with this warning light. As you put your vehicle in the reverse gear, anyone or anything who might be behind you will be alerted. This is going to send out a really consistent beeping sound.

The beeping sound can be clearly heard, again, when you move your vehicle to the reverse gear. That sound will vary depending on the vehicle that this is installed in. This is not a universal application, though it does fit in any vehicles, but if your vehicle's reversible to size 3156, then this product is going to work perfect for your application. I'm going to go ahead and hook it up to our external power source that way you can see how bright the bulb is as well as hear that audible beeping alert. Here at the housing, that's where the sound's going to come out. I'll get this connected and you'll be able to hear it.

Get all the wires on there. Okay, now turn it on. You can hear that consistent beeping as well as the bright light. It's really going to send out that consistent beeping sound alerting anybody that may be behind the vehicle when we move the vehicle into the reverse gear. That's going to do it for today's review of part number HM20101VA.

This is the Hopkins Backup Alert. .

No problems

Very happy with the service I received - fast shipping, and I got exactly what I ordered. The sound level of the product itself is a bit weak. On my old pickup I had an external beeper, and could always hear it from the cab whenever backing up. This one is easy to install, but I have to listen very carefully to be sure that it is working when I back up. I would recommend getting an external beeper mounted on your vehicle if you want to be sure people know that you are backing up.

Bulb with an audible alert installed on my 2009 Ford Ranger.

by:

Every week, I see in the news where some mom in her suv has backed over her own child. This alarm will catch the child's attention and give time to shout or get away. It should also work on dogs and cats. Is not effective on trash cans. ---Only suggestion: that the light blink.

When a backup light went out on our Coachman Motorhome I was just going to replace the bulb with the same. Looking around online I found this replacement bulb that also made an audible sound when the vehicle is in reverse. Visibility in reverse is nearly impossible, even in small motorhomes like ours ( 24'). We have a backup camera, but the viewing range is very limited to just beyond the rear bumper. With this product I have another level of safety I didn't have before, with the audible sound.
etrailer was really good about keeping me in the loop as to where my order was in the process. Turned out it was on Backorder, and would take a few days longer to make it to me in Seattle, but they sent emails on the status of the order regularly .
Cool product and great service from seller= a good buying experience!

1999 Ford F-150 and F-250 Light Duty

Definitely easy to install just like replacing regular back up bulb. Also, etrailer sent me the correct light for my model and year pickup truck. The whole installation process took about ten minutes, most of the time trying to find the correct socket size wrench! Only one minor issue is the back up alert sound is not that dramatic in volume while sitting in the truck and backing up. Maybe it is louder outside. In any case, this beats attaching brackets and splicing wires for backup alert as with other type units.

by:

Product worked as advertised. Installation was as easy as replacing a light bulb. Bulb is attached permanently. Would liked to have seen a socket so bulb could be replaced. When the bulb burns out I will replace the unit with a standard 3156 bulb and splice the alarm into the lamp wiring and leave it somewhere in the tail light cavity.

by:
1994 Ford F-250 and F-350

Product was exactly what I was looking for at a very reasonable price. The only problem I had was figuring out how to remove the tailight lens (NOT etrailer.com's problem). I wanted a means of warning anyone behine my truck that I was backing up and this was perfect.

by:

There was one of these installed ( not from etrailer) when I purchased my van. After a year or so it stopped working. I looked for quite some time to find a replacement that wasn't $40.00+ and E trailer gave me one. I can now feel better when backing up , knowing I will be heard and well lit . Thank you.

by:

Easy to install. So far it is working fine. Most anyone close by should hear it. However someone in a car might not hear it. I have a van with some blind spots. This is a big improvement over not having the warning. I ordered just one. I may order a second to see if that would increase the sound level. Right now I would recommend.

by:

easy installation, works well. won't know about the light output until I use the backup lights in the dark. Good service and packaging from the seller.

by:

Nice idea, but it took a few bulbs to be successful. The first ones either never alarmed or didn't light up. Replacements worked beautifully and still are months later

by:

This product is a cost effective way to provide safety warnings during construction activity. We priced other items and they were way more expensive and required a mechanic to install. In a couple of minutes we installed this item and it works perfectly. Etrailer.com has a quick and easy website and great service!

What a great design idea and quality product. A snap to install and works superbly. The brightness of the small bulb is surprisingly brighter than the larger OEM bulb.
Thanks for the this simple solution to our perplexing safety concern.

  • Troubleshooting Blinkers that Only Work when Headlights are On After LED Install
Sounds like you need to install a load resistor on the circuits that carry the turn signals. I am not completely sure what circuits you installed the LEDs on but it sounds like the turn signals so you would need load resistors like part # DI34ZR for a pair. One of these needs to be installed on every circuit that has a blinker or flasher. I attached a picture that shows how it will install on your circuits.

  • How Loud is Hopkins Backup Alert for 3156 Bulbs
The back up alert and replacement reverse light bulb # HM20101VA is going to be less than 97 decibels. The overall sound will vary depending on the vehicle it is installed on since the light housings are different on all vehicles. But no matter what vehicle it is installed on you should be able to hear it without issue. If you want something louder I recommend back up alarm # PK41820. It is rated for 97 decibels and you will be able to hear it better since you can mount it under the vehicle....

  • Backup Alarm for a 2013 Ford C-Max
The W16W indicates a 16 watt bulb and also is synonymous with a 921 bulb. So in other words, W16W and 921 are the same thing. We do not have a backup alarm and replacement bulb that will fit in place of a W16W or 921 bulb. But I do have a solution for you. You could install a stand alone backup alarm, # PK41820. This will actually be louder than the replacement bulb types of alarms. It can mount underneath the vehicle and simply wires into a reverse light wire.
