How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Trailer Jack - Sidewind Bolt Thru Swivel Trailer Jack - BD29FR

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look together at this Bulldog Sidewind Bolt through Swivel Trailer Jack. This bolt on side mounted swivel jack is going to let you raise and lower your trailer. This jack is designed (jack thudding softly) for use with marine and utility trailers, and you're gonna be able to swing this jack up to stow parallel to the tongue of your trailer for travel, and then move it back into the upright position for use. And as you can see here, (jack shuffling) this does have a pull pin. It's gonna be kinda tricky for me to do this while balancing on a wheel here, but (pin clicking) you see you have that capability there with that pole pin, (hands tapping) you'll just pull that, and you'll be able to swivel it.

So, very easy operation. And this is going to work with trailer frames from three to five inches tall. And this has a lift capacity of 1,500 pounds. And this does feature a soft ergonomic grip on the side winding handle that's going to make this very easy to crank. And just to go back out for a wide view here real quick, I do have this fully retracted currently, but the operation's gonna be very smooth, it doesn't feel like it's going to bind up or anything like that.

So, very smooth operation made all the more easier by the really nice comfortable grip that's on this handle. (handle shuffling) Now this, I want to give you some measurements here of the bracket height as best as I can. So, since I have this fully retracted measuring from the ground to the center of our bracket, hopefully you can see we're sitting really close to 12 and 5/16ths inches. So, that's going to be the retracted bracket height. This has a lift of 10 inches.

So, when this is fully extended, that bracket height's going to be 22 and 5/16ths inches. And this 360 degree caster is going to make it easy to maneuver your trailer. And just looking at the diameter of our wheel here, see if I can line that up there for you real quick without it movin' around too much. Looks like that diameter is sitting right at six inches. And this does feature a heavy (component clinking) gauge steel construction with a gray powder coat finish that's corrosion resistant.

This is a bulldog jack obviously, and they're well known for making really durable products and really robust products, and this is really no exception to that. You are going to get the hardware here that you see here on my table to mount this to your trailer, along with instructions to guide you through that installation process. Well, I think that's going to wrap up our real quick look today, I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me.
