How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Product arrived very promptly as I was upgraded to expedited status. Product was exactly as described, packaged well, and met my expectations. Product description and pictures on the website were very accurate and helped me choose the correct trailer jack for my application. etrailer.com is a pleasure to do business with.

by:

Very sturdy construction. My light duty round jack failed in my camper and needed to be replaced. I always wanted a drip leg instead of using blocks. I had t cutout a square hole but well worth the extra effort to have a heavy duty jack with a drop leg. Thanks again to etrailer for excellent pricing and fast free shipping.

by:

Poorly packaged as it almost had fallen through box.

This is the 2nd Bulldog Jack I've bought from Etrailer and it's for a new 20' trailer we set up for our roofing business (I'll throw the stock A-frame jack in the trash). The drop leg makes disconnect quick and easy. We tried swivel, electric and a side mount, but this type was best for our application. And Bulldog was the best quality of the bunch. I've had nothing but great service from Etrailer and won't hesitate to purchase from them again!

We use our equipment and this jack has been used thoroughly for the last year and it still operates just like new. We bought another for our new towable generator. The leg makes for quick disconnect. I wont use another trailer without it.

by:

Just installed today. Had to modify mounting plate for square tubing on this drop leg jack because it replaced a round tube fixed leg jack. Not too tough. We’ll see how well the jack holds up. Bulldog products are usually solid, so don’t expect any problems.

It was still going strong when I sold the trailer in August 2019! New buyer was glad to see the upgrade...

by:

They did a great job of getting me what I needed in a timely fashion. Arrived today and it's perfect.

by:

Works great and fit perfectly.

by:

Product works great. I have a 19 foot trailor with 7000 lb. axels that is heaver than average. The jack works easly loaded or empty.

Its been a year and the jack is working as good as the first day I installed it.

by:

The original tongue jack on my trailer was getting stiff, was of inadequate capacity and needed to have a block placed under it to elevate the coupling enough to detach the trailer.

Replacing the original with this jack seemed like a good solution. The original jack was round so I did have to cut and file the openings in the coupler and lower tongue reinforcing plate to make it fit. Also, only one of the original three holes lined up so new holes had to be drilled.

So far the jack has worked great. The items that kept me from giving it a better rating are:
1) There is no provision for lubricating it.
2) The paint chips very easily.

by:

I installed this product on my camping trailer it is awesome very robust !! Exceeded my expectations as far as strength and quality ! Great product

This is an awsome product !! The name says it all very strong and sturdy product !! I would buy again !!

by:

Etrailer sent me the wrong jack at first, called them up and had the right one sent in 3 days. Love this jack, the pinned foot extension saves a ton of crank time on the handle.

by:

Fast shipping great product

by:

Strong durable construction at a very reasonable price. My enclosed motorcycle trailer was well crafted with exception to the jack, it was made with poor quality steel and the workings were exposed to weather so I knew it would it be short time before I had to replace it. I always go with Bulldog products because they are of great quality and withstand the test of time.

by:

Haven't had time to test durability, but initial impression is that it sure beats the original jack that came with the trailer. The drop down foot saves a lot of time cranking and fiddling with the sand foot I used to have to attach each time I unhooked the trailer. Additionally, it is much sturdier with side deflection than a similar round jack.

by:

jack came as it was describe and has more weight capacity lift. I welded on my trailer and it's way much easier then OEM 750 LBs that broke up the gears.

Lights will be put on another trailer this coming weekend.

Thank you.
Frank

by:

Well built unit. Handles the weight well even on sloped terrian. Only flaw is it lack's a grease fitting which started making it difficult to use due to lack of lubrication. I added one nevertheless. And now it works like new again.

by:

Love the drop leg design.screw works gr eat.

by:

We have a fleet of restroom trailers and we often have a need for replacement parts. These Bulldog A-Frame Jacks are the best tongue jacks that we have found. Etrailer has the best prices and extremely fast delivery. We have purchased several items from etrailer and have always been very satisfied with their products, their prices, their service and their fast delivery.

by:

Finally took time to replace my old Jack with this, I am satisfied with my purchase, etrailer.com is the place to shop! Great prices & fast delivery keep me coming back.

by:

We use these A-Frame Jacks as replacements on our trailers. These jacks are very strong and easy to install in the existing holes. Bulldog makes very good trailer jacks. I highly recommend these jacks.

by:

Shipped as promised, drop leg is awesome, 3000 lb jack makes you look strong even when you are not

by:

THIS IS THE SECOND UNIT I PURCHASED. THE FIRST ONE WORKED SO WELL THAT I DECIDED TO GET A SECOND FOR ANOTHER TRAILER. CRANK WORKS WELL AND REALLY LIKE THE DROP LEG FEATURE. THE ONLY DRAWBACK WAS THAT I HAD TO ADAPT THE TRAILER BECAUSE IT WAS PREVIOUSLY FITTED WITH A ROUND JACK

by:

it is the ONLY a-frame jack I found with an extendable leg. Unfortunately it does Not just bolt in, in place the a regular a-frame jack. I had to to do some cutting and drilling to bolt it in

by:

Perfect fit love the drop foot!

  • Will the Ultra-Fab Spring-Loaded Quick Pins Fit a Bulldog Square, A-Frame Jack BD195318
The Ultra-Fab Spring-Loaded Quick Pins # UF17-943031 is designed for landing gear style jacks that have legs that are up to 2-1/4 inches wide with pin holes that are 3/8 inches in diameter. Well the part # BD195318 isn't a landing gear jack but it otherwise is compatible so it would work.

  • Bulldog Square A-Frame Trailer Jack is Hard to Crank
You will need to open up the jack at the top and inspect the gears inside. It is possible that you have some dirt/debris inside that is making it hard to operate the jack. If you open it up you should be able to remove the gears, clean them off, and get any grease, dirt, and debris out from the inside. Then you can put it all back together and add new grease. You will want to crank the jack up and down a few times to get everything lubricated with new grease. After that you may need to...

Since you are adding a plate to the top and bottom of your tongue, the Bulldog Jack Support Plate - A-Frame - 2.3" Square Hole # BDSPBQ50 is a great option for support if you already have a square jack. • Does Trailer Valet TV94FR Trailer Jack Feature a Drop Leg
The Trailer Valet # TV94FR trailer jack doesn't feature a drop leg. If you'd be interested in a sidewind jack with a 3K lift capacity, I'd recommend the etrailer branded # TJDA-5000S. The jack offers a total lift of 29 inches. If you'd prefer a top wind jack with a total lift of 28-1/2 inches and a 3K capacity, the Bulldog # BD195318 would be a fine choice. My recommendation is the Square A-Frame Jack w/ Footplate - Drop Leg - Sidewind - 15-1/4" Travel - 5,000 lbs, # TJDA-5000S. This jack has the same mounting as the Bulldog Square, A-Frame Jack - Drop Leg - Topwind - 15" Lift - 3,000 lbs, # BD195318 you mentioned. The only difference is that it is a sidewind jack instead of a topwind jack. We do not have a topwind option for square A-frame jacks with 5,000 lb capacity.
