Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13-inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. Now this is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer's brakes from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can get the added benefits that come along with having disc brakes. So having the two assemblies here we are gonna be able to upgrade a single Alko or Quality type axle with the 8,000 pound capacity and number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and as you can see, we've got the eight on six and a half-inch bolt pattern. So these are going to work with your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.
Our hub and rotor assemblies, as well as our calipers and our caliper mounting brackets are all E-coated, so they're gonna help resist rust and corrosion. They've got a 250 to 350 hour salt spray rating. So these are gonna be good for your camper, car hauler or utility trailer. Basically your applications that don't get a whole lot of contact with salt. If you're looking for disc brakes for your saltwater boat trailer or a vehicle that comes in contact with heavily salted roads and that sort of thing, I would recommend more of like a Dacromet finish or a stainless steel construction that's gonna give you a little bit more durability and long lasting life.
These are gonna be more for those applications that don't encounter a whole lot of salt. So they will hold up well and just aren't gonna be at that same caliber as your Dacromet and stainless steel finishes. But adding disc brakes onto your trailer, switching out over drum brakes is gonna have several different benefits. It's going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance so it's gonna be a lot more efficient. It's also going to give you a much smoother and more controlled ride.
So it's going to stop that pushing and pulling that you often get with your drum brakes. This setup does feature these ceramic brake pads that are going to provide increased stopping power. We've also got large two and a half-inch diameter stainless steel pistons that provide fast, responsive braking. And then in addition to better performance, these are also going to require less maintenance than your drum brakes. So it's gonna help save you time and money.
Having the one hub and rotor assembly, one piece assembly is going to help reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. We also have the vented design, as you can see here on the side, and it's gonna help dissipate your heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. And these are going to be a high-quality, automotive grade construction, so they are gonna be very long lasting for you. The one caveat with this brakes if you're switching from drum brakes is that they do require a higher line pressure. So you're gonna need to make sure that you have a brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1,500 psi or higher in order to activate the brakes. So this kit obviously doesn't come with that. We do sell those separately here at etrailer.com. But this kit is going to include your two hub and rotor assemblies that are E-coated cast iron construction. You're also going to get the eight 5/8 inch diameter pre-installed wheel bolts on each. You'll get 16 of these 5/8 inch lug nuts to make sure that your wheel stays in place. You'll get the two E-coated cast iron calipers, the two E-coated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets, which I mentioned a moment ago. And here on the backside, you can see these do have the four bolt brake flange configuration. So it's gonna be very easy to get this installed on your axle. I do wanna point out that I've got these mounted on top currently just for balance and demonstration purposes but when you install them, they'll actually be on the side. And that side support design actually puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket itself instead of on the mounting bolts, so the bolts will last longer. You're gonna get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts as well as the built in inner and outer races, the inner and outer bearings. And this is a grease lubricated system. So you're going to get your two grease seals and your two E-Z Lube grease caps so that you can put the grease in your bearings and make sure it all stays in place there to keep everything running smoothly for you. So, again, if you're looking for an upgrade for your trailer that's used for camping or car hauling, something along those lines, this is gonna be a great upgrade for you. And that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
