Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

The included custom adapter plugs into the connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which is underneath your dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Once you have the wiring connected to your vehicle, just plug the other end into the POD. Because there are no wires to splice, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove the brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for electric brake controllers. This is going to allow you to easily connect your brake controller to your vehicle. The black end is going to connect to your brake controller at the back of that controller, just plugs right in and snaps into place. The other end, or the gray end, is going to plug into your vehicle. Now this is custom fit to work with your GMC Sierra 1500, with the factory tow package, as well as the Chevy Silverado 1500, with the tow package, and that's from years 2019 and newer. So this is going to mount up to a port underneath the dash on your driver's side. It's just going to plug right in, has this little tab right there, so you can release that. The nice thing about this adapter is that we don't have to cut or splice anything.

You just plug in both ends and you're ready to go. That also makes it easy to remove this, if you don't want to have your brake controller in your truck all the time. You can easily unplug it, plug it back in, you're good to go.It is going to be custom fit for your vehicle, so you just match up the pins and the plug itself to that harness. It's going to be, again, underneath the driver's side dash, kind of up towards the left side or the kick panel on your driver's side there. You might have to reach up underneath the dash and cut a little bit of tape to get it to come down, but that's where you'll plug this in.

You just want to basically look for anything that's going to match this directly. This is going to be compatible with brake controllers, time delayed. CT-3001-Z It'll work with the Draw-Tite Activator 1, 11 and 111, as as well as the Tekonsha PowerTrac, and it's also going to work with proportional brake controllers, including the Tekonsha Prodigy, the Tekonsha P2, the P3, the Tekonsha Primus IQ, as well as the Tekonsha Voyager. This is just to be a really easy solution to get your brake controller in your vehicle and on with your life. That's going to do it for our look at the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for electric brake controllers.

Great little brake controller for the money if you don't need heavy braking on a larger trailer. Simple and economic.

by:

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

by:

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

by:

I haven't had this brake controller installed yet, but it looks like it's fairly straight forward and easy to do, even for someone that's not very mechanically inclined. We'll see how it goes. I received the brake controller device and the wiring device in minimum time, very quick to arrive!!

by:

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by:

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by:

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by:

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

by:

I needed a harness adapter to move my Tekonsha brake controller from my old pickup to my new one. The customer service folks at etrailer quickly helped me with the exact one I needed and it was in my hands three days later, perfect fit and I’m up and running. Etrailer has been my go-to for all my trailering and RV needs hot several years and they’ve always come through!

by:

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by:

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

by:

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

by:

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

by:

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

by:

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

by:

I've installed 3 plug in Tekonsha adapters for 3 different vehicles and found them all to be to specifications making the installation a breeze

by:

Got a new 2024 Silverado to replace our 2002 model. This plug is a perfect fit do I can use my Prodigy 2 in our new Truck. etrailer is my go to for all my towing needs

by:

Product arrived quickly and installed very easily. Plug and play with the correct adapter (3035-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) for a 2001 Ford F-150. Controller is very easy to set the braking on your trailer.

by:

Installed on 2003 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package. Installation was a breeze with the included vehicle specific wiring adapter. It took me about 45 minutes total. Looks professionally installed. Easy to use. Set the adjustment for your specific trailer and go!

by:

I ordered everything to install hitch an and 7 pin plug. Everything went great. Parts were all perfect and instructions easy to follow.

by:

If you want to mount your controller at the center of your dash the harness will reach it but not long enough to hide wires under the dash, just to darn short

by:

I ordered the powertrac with the 22292, 2011 ford F150 wiring adapter, It works great. 15 mins, and I had everything ready to go. It is a little sensitive to adjust but ones you get the feel for it, it takes no time to adjust. very happy with this unit, I would recommend this unit to everyone.

by:

work great for my application

by:

Didn't take long to get once I ordered it. Very easy to install. I used the video to help with the install. Can't wait to start camping. Would definitely use etrailer.com again and will recommend it to friends and family.

by:

Very easy installation in about twenty minutes. Connected effortlessly to both the brake controller and the truck wiring.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller That Stopped Working After Breakaway Pin Was Pulled
Sounds like the third brake light fuse of your truck blew possible when the breakaway cable was pulled. Since this circuit is tied to the stoplight circuit used for brake controllers typically when this fuse blows the brake controllers typically stop working with the brake pedal. Easy way to check this is to press the brakes and see if the cab light on the truck activates with the brakes. Testing the brake controller is fairly easy though. A heavy dresser that weighs close to 1000-lbs certainly has the grunt needed to pull a small trailer without difficulty, that is the easy part, but the handling side-effects are the concerns. A loaded trailer's tongue tugging at your bike's hitch ball may not be as unpleasant as I imagine. I have...

  • Determining Which Electric Brakes Will Work For A 2001 Triton Snowmobile Trailer
Yes, you can eliminate the use of your disc brakes and add electric brakes to your 2001 Triton Snowmobile Trailer. I would need to know the weight capacity of your axle, what size drum you have on your current brakes, and the bolt pattern that your currently have on your wheels. There are a few different options it could be depending on the weight capacity of your axle. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA is for a 3,500 pound axle and has a 10 x 2-1/4 inch drum. Nuts and lock...

  • Where To Connect Tekonsha PowerTrac For Install On 2011 GMC Sierra 1500
Yes, the other part you need to connect the Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller part # 39523 to your 2011 GMC 3500 truck is brake controller wiring pig tail part # 20127. There is not a port under the dash that allows you to plug the brake controller right in like in some other vehicles, however the wiring is already under the dash for you to connect the pig tail to. I have attached an installation video for your reference. There will also be some wiring attachments that need...

  • Comparing Time Delay and Proportional Trailer Brake Controllers
Proportional, hands down. The reason for this is that the proportional controllers are going to provide safe and even braking on the trailer in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. Time delay controllers will send back the same amount of power no matter how the tow vehicle is braking. Proportional controllers provided the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on the trailer and tow vehicle. The only advantage that a time delay controller has is that it does not...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Controller That Causes Trailer Brakes to Surge When Pedal is Released
The best troubleshooting method for determining the issue is to substitute either another truck or another trailer to see if the issue remains. Since your brake controller is a few years old it is possible that it could cooked, but it is also possible that the trailer's brakes may have an issue. Depending on the nature of the storage conditions you might have an issue in the trailer brakes themselves. If you happen to have a time-delay type brake controller, such as the Tekonsha PowerTrac...

  • Brake Controller that Will Work with Electric and Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brakes
If the trailer with hydraulic brakes uses a surge coupler (the coupler pushes in when the vehicle slows to send fluid back to the trailer brakes) then you can use any brake controller you want. But if the trailer with hydraulic brakes has an electric over hydraulic brake actuator then you will need a compatible brake controller. There are a couple of controllers I normally recommend for both regular electric brakes and electric over hydraulic brake systems. They are the P2, # 90885, and...

  • Parts Needed to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2011 Kia Sorento
Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so you can install any controller you want on your 2011 Kia Sorento. For your vehicle it is a hardwire situation and you will need a few parts for the installation. First, if the vehicle does not have a 4-Way trailer connector, you will need to add one using # 118506 if you have a 4 cylinder or other model WITHOUT the towing prep package. If you do have the towing prep package, use # HM11143965. I have linked instructions for both harnesses for...

  • How to Connect the Red Wire to the Brake Pedal Switch on a 2009 Saturn Vue
To make the connection to the brake light switch on your 2009 Saturn Vue with the red wire from the brake controller, you will have to make the connection at the brake light fuse in the under-hood fuse box. I would recommend using a fuse tap that is available at most hardware stores. This connection cannot be made at the switch above the brake pedal. To determine which fuse is the brake light fuse, there should be a diagram of the fuses on the lid of the fuse box, or you could use a circuit...

  • Which is Actually Better? a Proportional or Time-Delayed Trailer Brake Controller
Proportional brake controllers like the Prodigy P3 part # 90195 are by far the better choice over time delayed. Proportional controllers use internal sensors to determine how hard your trailer brakes should be applied based on how hard they sense you are applying the vehicles brakes. A time-delayed controller applies a set amount of braking force that ramps up over a set amount of time and then stays at that force till the brakes are released. If you think about how often you apply the...

  • Adding 7-Way Trailer Connector to Trailer and Brake Controller to 2011 Toyota Tundra
First, on a 7-Way trailer connector, the center pin is NOT the brake output pin. On a vehicle side 7-Way it is the pin in the 5 o'clock position. On a trailer side 7-Way it is the pin in the 7 o'clock position. It sounds like you are using a 7-Way to 4-Way adapter to go from the truck's 7-Way receptacle to a trailer 4-Way flat. This means the trailer does not have electric brakes, or if it does have electric brakes someone replaced the original connector with a 4-Way flat. If your trailer...

  • Using Aftermarket Trailer Brake Controller on 2014 Chevy Silverado with Factory Brake Controller
It is not at all uncommon for owners of trucks with factory brake controllers to switch back to the aftermarket units like the Tekonsha PowerTrac # 39523. Convenience is great but solid performance is much better! If you have a Silverado 1500 you can use a quick-connect brake controller adapter # 3016 to plug in a unit such as the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885, which is among the most reliable and easy to use proportional controllers we offer, to the under-dash port. It works both with electric...

Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so you can use the PowerTrac # 39523 on your 2016 Ford F-250 to activate the electric brakes on your 5th wheel trailer. To plug the controller into the truck you will also need wiring harness # 3034-P. The PowerTrac is a time delay brake controller which means it will deliver the same amount of braking no matter how hard the tow vehicle is braking. It can be difficult to set time delay controllers just right and they can lead to more wear and...

I spoke with my co-worker, Bob, about this for some time this morning. We are both thinking you have a ground issue somewhere or possibly a short. Between the trailer brakes and the brake controller there are several grounds that need to be checked. I will start at the top and work down one by one till we can find the source of the problem. Some of this may be redundant so bear with me. I assume you mean that the green light does not come on when the truck is on and the trailer is connected....

  • Will Brake Circuit on 7-Way Show Brake Output Power When Vehicle is Still
In a typical vehicle 7-way socket the blue wire for the brake circuit (carried on the pin at the 5-o-clock position) will carry the trailer brake signal from the brake controller back to the 7-way socket. Whether or not you will detect a signal on that blue wire when the Navigator is still and with no trailer connected depends on the type of controller. A time-delay type controller like # 39523 will send out its selected power output whether you are moving or still, either by pressing...

  • Adding Trailer Wiring to a 2009 Suzuki Boulevard C90T Motorcycle to Tow a Trailer
First, you are going to want to determine the functions of the 5-Way connector on the trailer in order to find a wiring solution that will be compatible. Motorcycles have separate turn signals and brake lights. If the trailer also has separate turn signals and brake lights, making a wiring harness will be easy. You can just use a 5-Way harness like # HM37908. You will have to wire it to the bike by function to match the function on the trailer 5-Way. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993...

  • Can 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6L Tow a 2,200 lb Trailer in the Mountains
That's a bit of a loaded question but I will line up my responses with your questions to try to help keep everything organized. Since you will be towing in the mountains I would say give yourself a larger cushion when it comes to towing capacity simply because the thinner mountain air will have an affect on the performance of any vehicle, especially when pulling a load. The actual max trailer weight rating for your 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6L can vary on whether you have the tow...
