Converting Hydraulic Disc Brakes to Electric Drum Brakes on 2007 Mastercraft Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 2007 Mastercraft boat trailer with dual axle hydraulic disc brakes. The tongue actuator is bad and is apparently a common problem. I’ve read that people convert these to electric brakes. Do you guys have a conversion kit for this that maintains the fold away tongue?

Although we do not have a premade kit I can help you put the parts together. As long as you have slack in the wire it will allow you to still use the folding tongue. You also need to find your axle capacity and possibly bearing combination since you will need new brake assemblies along with new hub and drum assemblies.

In addition to the hubs and brakes you're going to need wiring, a breakaway kit, and a brake controller. I recommend the following:

-7-Way Molded Connector w/ 15' Cable - Trailer End # 50-67-103 (Along with # 38656 if you want a junction box)

-Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger - Top Load # 20400

-Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR along with # 3064-P and # 331-TPH-017 (With Tow Package) or # RED77FR (Without Tow Package)

If you already have a brake controller on your 2024 Sierra 2500 you can ignore that part. I have attached a help article below which covers the parts needed to add electric brakes for a trailer. I have also added a link to all of our hub and drum assemblies and brake assemblies you can look at once you find your axle information. You can also send that to me and I would be happy to help you find the remaining parts.

Thanks Robin, I assume the axle information should be on a sticker on the axles themselves? How do I determine the bearing combination? Also, is there a replacement tongue assembley that is a bolt on replacement for my existing one? I believe the trailer was originally made by Reliable which to my understanding has gone out of business. Thanks, Erik

@ErikN sorry for the delay our comments weren't coming through. That is correct, the axle tag will be on the axle beam. You can find your bearing combination using the axle tag if the manufacturer is still in business since they will be able to identify all parts on the axle. You can also check your bearings for part numbers or measure their inner diameter. We don't have a complete replacement tongue assembly. What we do have is the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3" x 3" Tongue # FHDPB330301 which could be used to make a new folding tongue.
