Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2022 Ram 1500, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Hayes Gauge Trailer Brake controller in conjunction with the Curt wiring adaptor plug. But before we get into that, let's just take a minute, check this out and make sure it's gonna be the right brake controller for you. So you got your truck and you need to pull a trailer around that has brakes. We're gonna need a way to apply those trailer brakes and that's where something like this is gonna come into play. So this one is gonna work for those trailers that have electric brakes as well as electric over hydraulic and it's gonna work with trailers that have up to three axles.
So you know that should pretty much cover all your bases in terms of what you're gonna be towing with your ring. So my first initial thoughts on this one, I like it I don't know what it is about it. Maybe just the feel of it and the screen. And the screen is something you don't see too often on time delay type brake controllers just usually not a feature. And the time delay, what that means is this is going to apply the trailer brakes at a preset, you know level over a certain distance or a certain amount of time as opposed to a proportional type brake controller.
What that's gonna do is kind of match a breaking pressure that you use. So for example, you know on a proportional one if you hit the brakes halfway in the truck trailer brakes are gonna do that. If you slam the brakes in the truck the trailer brakes are gonna engage like that as well. With this one, regardless if you're barely on the brake or you're all the way down, you know the trailer brakes are going to be preset. So to give you an example of how a time delayed one works like this one, you can, you can watch a screen.
It actually is a pretty good indication and maybe that's why I like it 'cause you can kind of see what's going on. So whether I barely tap the brake or mat it down or in between, it's gonna essentially put that same power out so you can see the numbers going up at that certain rate and that's kind of what you get. With this one, you are actually able to adjust it though. So let's say if you have a light trailer, all right so this is gonna be the power going back to the brake. So right now 50% it's usually a good starting point but let's say if your trailer's pretty light really don't need all that breaking power can dial it down to 25 or somewhere in the middle, you know you can fine tune it so you can see I hit the brake.
That's what it'll run up to. On the other hand if you're fully loaded or maybe you know way up you know going through some mountainous terrain or something like that, you can crank it up. I'll let this clear here so we can see, you know actually see the number go up. You can crank it up and it'll run and keep applying power and power and power to slow you down. So you can really kind of fine tune this to your particular liking depending on what your tow in or where you're pulling your trailer. It's going to have a manual override which is this big red button here. And when you push this in what it's gonna do is apply just the trailer brakes. So a lot of times you use this in the event of a sway situation if your trailer starts to kind of get away from you, you can gradually apply this it'll apply just those brakes slowing the trailer down and get it to you know ride true again and track right behind your truck. You know, the overall operation of it feels smooth you know the lever feels good. Sometimes you get some that are a little bit notchy and that's just really not the case with this one. And it's relatively slim. I mean it's not the smallest brake controller out there nor the biggest, you know, a decent fit for the Ram. And with the time delayed ones you have a lot of different mounting locations too. So it really opens up your opportunities on where you can put this and all you know what's gonna be most comfortable for you. Other than that though, at the end of the day I like the brake controller, you know it feels pretty solid. I like how it's a little more interactive compared to some of the other ones. You got that screen, kind of see what's going on and lets you make those fine adjustments. So you know, one you really can't go wrong with at least in my opinion as far as installation goes, really not bad at all having that adapter plug that we used. Essentially plug it into a factory connector under the dash and mouth this up. That's really about it. So shouldn't give you too many issues but if you wanna stick around we'll go ahead and hook it up together now. To begin our installation we're gonna be here in the front seat of our Ram and what we're gonna need to do is locate the factory connector plug which is located behind this panel here in our dash. So we'll have to remove this, starting by taking out two screws along the bottom. We're gonna take a seven millimeter to get 'em removed. Put the two screws out, this should just kind of pop out so if you grab the edges of it we can let this come down. Yeah, we should have room now without having to disconnect anything to find our connector plug. So if you look up and behind the panel there we're gonna have a handful of connectors that are just kind of taped up to some wiring. The trailer brake controller connector should be located within this bundle. So what I'm gonna do is remove the tape and hopefully we can drop it down and have a better look at it. So I just pulled the connector out of that tape and this is the one we're looking for. It has four pins in it so that's gonna be our trailer brake controller plug. And now what we can do is take our adapter here that we're using, simply just plug that right on in. So I went ahead and just dropped our connector, you know below our panel here and we can reinstall the panel. But this is a good opportunity to to see what we got going on the back. So we're gonna mount our controller, you know, somewhere on the right side of the panel. And really the only thing we have going on here is this piece. So you know about halfway down is where we wanna mount it. So just to kind of give you a visual of what's going on the backside 'cause when you mount a controller up you know you don't wanna drill into anything important. So we're in pretty good shape here and we'll just reinstall this. The opposite whenever you removed it. At this point you can mount up your bracket and we're gonna go right here in this location. Now when you do this, you know make sure to try to get it as levels as you can and we're just going to take the included screws, run 'em into the dash to get the security. Before we actually mount up the brake controller, what I like to do is kind of pre-thread the attachment holes there because these are just plastic and they're not threaded and so when you're trying to hold this up to the bracket you know kind of a pain. So what makes it a lot easier if you take the included screws that they give you and just run 'em down and actually kind of start to cut those threads you know it makes it much, much easier to get 'em all started and get it secured. So I did that for our four attachment points there and now what we can do simply just grab our adapter wire and plug it right into the brake controller. So I got our brake controller in place got this screw started and positioned how you want it and I'll just come back with a quarter inch and snug 'em down. So I went ahead and cleaned up her wiring just kind of tucked it up under our dash and zip tied it up out of the way. You know, make sure to avoid any moving parts while you're under there. Don't go around the steering column or anything. Then I just took a piece of wire loom and put it up over our brake controller wiring there just to help kind of clean up our inside look. It is a good idea to test your brake controller to make sure that it's working properly. So I just hooked into a test box. Chances are pretty good you're not gonna have that so you can use your trailer but keep in mind, you know if your trailer has any issues it could mislead you into thinking it's something on the brake controller side. But, do this a couple ways here. One will hit our manual override so we got power getting sent back there so that's a good indication. And then if I push down on our brake pedal we can see the power ramp up as well so we know everything's working. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the Hayes and Gauge Trailer Brake Controller on our 2022 Ram 1500.
Super easy to install with the wire loom purchased separate
After one year of use the unit works as advertised but does require some getting used to.When first installed it goes to 25% activation in a total of 5 seconds so I turned it down to 15% and like it better loaded or empty..I prefer a proportional controller over timed but due to shortages at the time of purchase this one has filled the job well..Good price and easy install so will see how long it lasts...
Easy install and works great. I get all my trailering items from etrailer and have never had an issue.
Shipment was prompt and I received exactly what I ordered. Super easy to install in my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 and im a girl. :)
Very good company to deal with will tell others about your great company
Nissan Titan pulling a fully loaded 14x7 Cargo Mate Blazer enclosed trailer. The unit was pretty easy to install. etrailer included the proper wiring harness for my Titan. It is not difficult to find the proper brake setting for the load size and not hard to tweak on the fly. This unit worked like a charm while hauling this large load about 1000 miles. So far it has been worth every penny and I got it at a great price!
Packaged well, came 1 day earlier than expected. Exactly what I ordered.
Great. Easy
Easy to install as I also ordered the wire adapter kit for my truck. Installation was quick and the unit works as I expected. Good investment for safety. Between the phone help with the ordering of the wire adapter kit and You Tube, it took me longer to watch the videos than it actually took to install it.
Hayes trailer brake controller, custom wiring adapter, power cord adapter, andersen camp leveler, trailer leveler. All of these items were delivered in a timely manner and as advertized. Will probably order other items in the future.
Good product, easy fitment into factory Ford storage cubby. Small hole in back of cubby made to allow wire harness to pass through.
I have not had a chance to use the brake controller yet. I did get it installed today. The installation was easy.
The only thing that I might say is that the set up information was not very clear. It seems like there should be a notation somewhere in the set up about how long the lights are going to flash when there is an OC readout on the unit or how to stop the flashing. Maybe I missed something in the instructions.
The website was easy to work with. When I needed help I was able to reach someone immediately and they couldn’t be more helpful. The items arrived earlier than expected. Installation was straight forward and works like it should. I would recommend using etrailer for all your towing and trailer needs.
This was a replacement purchase. The original failed at 8 years old. The original started flashing the brake lights every 5 seconds while turned off and parked. Every thing fit back in the original spot. I have not tried the function with a trailer on.
I purchased this item, didn’t read enough to know I needed an adaptor to fit my Chevy Silverado. Cut the wires and spliced them into my Chevy pigtail provided. Thought the item was not working. Called in and was told someone would call me back the next day with instructions. As told, a representative call me and advised me that Chevy has a different color code. After a quick change everything was functioning as hoped thank you e trailer
It’s easy to adjust to get the brake controls. I have a 26 foot filth wheel camper and it makes it easy to stop in the event of emergency.
This controller was so easy, mounting it under the dash, put in the 40 amp fuse. And the controller was ready to go. Install time was less than a hour. That included going to the parts place and getting a fuse. I am very happy
Works perfectly! Great service.
this is the best for the money you can buy,I deleted one star because the info on color codes as relates to my 2022 gmc makes it difficult to match color codes with the truck. neither kelsey or gm are great at this identification, particuly in terms of battery/ grounds/ signal /trailer brakes/ etc
works very well with my 28 ft trailer....easy to install...fit nice in the cuby hole ...with a little mod.... on the lower left side of my dash......looks factory
I love it, I have one in both of my trucks. It works on single & double axle brakes., you can adjust the delay & see what you set it on and don't have to guess what it is on. Very easy to adjust brakes for your loads, there again you can also see what you have it set on also. My neighbor used one of my trucks to haul a load hay & loved it . Asked me to order him one for his truck.
we had used this controller in the past, and the new one plugged right in for us
Directions were perfect. Never wired a truck for trailer control. Got it right the first time.
Easy install and works great. No complaints here.
Very simple install
Happy with the order
