Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller Shows bF Error Code

Question:

Installed the hays engage in my 2016 nissan frontier with the factory tow package. All the running lights, brake lights and turn signals work but the brake controller wont do anything except show bF on the screen.. Once you disconnect the trailer it goes to OC for no connection, so it seems like everything else is working except the brakes.. Where do I start?

The error codes shown on the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller part # HA81760 can be easily deciphered by looking at the owner's manual. Per the manual, "bF" indicates the blue wire is connected to wrong place, short in wiring / connector, faulty or disconnected breakaway switch. The blue wire is the brake output wire that runs from the brake controller to the 7-way and then from the 7-way to the braking assemblies. Therefore, I recommend tracing this wire to ensure there are no shorts of breaks.
