The tailgate itself took a little time to loosen up and start moving freely but did. I’m very happy with the purchase!
I thought it was a metal tailgate not plastic. the insert on right side pivot point broke immediately. request new part and explanation of how it is inserted.

The part you are talking about is part # SC95GR. It installs the same way as outlined in the instructions that come with the tailgate. They simply slide in the channel on the tailgate. I Went ahead and sent you an email about this, as well.
I give it a four just because I feel it can be more durable there is gap from one end to the other that can fit a metal pipe.....hint hint. I weigh like 210 and afraid to enter with the tailgate down. I do like the amount of space between my fifth wheel and the gate. Another suggestion etrailer maybe make a quick release pin for the tailgate insert? So I can take the insert of quick when I need too.

I do recommend taking some extra care when entering your truck bed with your tailgate down as the Stromberg Carlson 4000 Series Tailgate is not designed for any weight bearing application, including standing on the tailgate.
Looks good on my 08 Dodge. Easy installation and the video really helped!
This is a very light weight tailgate. I think the lock could be a little more heavier duty with harder access for keeping it secure. Looks great on the truck.
Absolute piece of... Well... It's PLASTIC! Has a sticker that says... Don't step here! Incredibly disappointed in this product. Some folks say it's decent for the money.... Really! I could have gotten a steel one for less... Which was what I Thought I was receiving. Yes.. It looks good but will be replacing in less than a year. Very Very Dissappointed!

This 5th wheel tailgate is made of a glass-filled composite plastic. It is made to be lightweight and to resist rust. It is not a weight bearing tailgate however, you would not be able to stand on it.
I just back from a long road trip and installed the new tailgate. It fits find and looks good on my 3500 ram
It fits, just that you have to change the latch around and try to fit the cover on the driver side that barely fit.
Easy install some minor adjustments on the truck. etrailer was a pleasure to do business with. Will buy from them again.
The product looks great.. It's disappointing finding out the low weight ratings that are far below a normal tailgate. Knowing I can't stand on the tailgate is frustrating because I know I'll do it not thinking
For the price I figured it would be better quality and fit better. Had to to take the plate off the back and tighten the bolt on the latch so you can open it.
Exactly what I was expecting. Not a "work" tailgate, but comes off easily to put on original tailgate when I need it. Just what I was looking for as a 5th wheel tailgate at a great price. Had it on my truck assembled and wings adjusted in less than half an hour!

Working great! With a dual purpose truck, having a 5th wheel tailgate that is easy on easy off in just a few seconds is perfect.
O wasn't sure if I would like the tailgate but after installation and a year of use it's held up well. It's not steel and has it's limits so I'm cautious about putting to much stress on the gate but at times had to use it for support and it's held up fine.
LOW QUALITY - POOR FIT - Buyer beware!!
After reading some of the customer ratings, I hesitated to order this tailgate, but took a chance.......I should have listened to my inner voice.
The other customer reviews are accurate.
PROS: it is light weight, it does not look too bad
CONS: although it states that it is custom fit for my Dodge, it is NOT a great or even good fit. The plastic covers sit 3/8 of an inch higher than the tops of the bed sidewalls. I am pretty particular about my truck and this bugs the heck out of me!. In addition, the receiver sleeve on the drivers side was a VERY tight fit and does not allow the gate to open easily.
Installation of the side panels (that cover the latch mechanisms on both sides) were a nightmare to get on. On one side, I had to take my angle grinder to remove some of the metal and then still had to use clamps to get the bottom screw in place.
The last issue that I had was when i placed the metal screws into the two holes on the inside of the driver side cover, somehow it bound up the door mechanisms and it would no longer open.....I for darn sure was not going to take the cover off to investigate after take almost and hour (grinding and clamps) to get it on......I just took the screw out.
This is not the right product for you if you expect a true custom fit . I also feel that is is overpriced relative to the quality of the materials.
I do not expect that I will be doing business with etrailer in the future. Although the website states that "Customer Satisfaction is Guaranteed", they will not accept a return once you have installed the product. How in the heck are you supposed to tell how something is going look and perform until after you have a chance to install it?????
Great tailgate. Easy on, easy off. Does everything that a tailgate should - the only negatives are how weak the material is and how difficult it is to latch it closed. You have give it a really good slam on each side to get it closed and then you are able to turn the latch and lock it. The plastic has not broken on mine, but I've seen a few more around town that are broken. The most likely reason for this issue is that folks are not reading the giant warning label affixed to the tailgate - DO NOT EXCEED 100 LBS ON TAILGATE. So, you can't stand on it or put your heavy tools on it. For the money, it's a great replacement tailgate and mine is still holding up just fine one year later.
Latches are weak won't hold when driving down gravel roads. Pull on it comes open,nuts and bolts come loose and fall off.

I have gotten in contact with one of our installers and they recommend using lock tight on the screw if you would like to make the nuts and bolt lock into place.

Very good light weight easy to take on and off.
This is a great product easy to install cheaper after market product with that custom look.
I'm very happy with my tailgate . It was vey easy to install all you have to do is follow the instructions. it took me about 45 minutes start to finish. After a year it still looks new and works like a charm. My friends wanted to know were I bought it it told with e-trailers. I know for a fact 2 of my friends bought one also .
The end covers on both sides fit was terrible. The middle two mounting screws holes did not come close to hitting the two mounting blocks glued on the plastic end covers. Also had to use Dremel tool to trim some plastic off the end covers to fit properly.
The tailgate is rather flimsy for the price, in my opinion. It doesn't lock correctly, falls open randomly. But on the other hand it says not to step on it and a 100 lb weight limit, and I've done both of those, so its stronger than it says. I've already replaced it.
As always, shipping was prompt and item was the lowest price I could find. Tailgate was easy to install and will fit my need nicely. I do wish that the tailgate was designed to take more of a load but it really isn’t an issue as it’s easy to step past the tailgate when climbing into the truck bed. The tailgate is very easily removed by one person if needed. It looks great on my truck to boot. I’m happy with it.
Easy to install and looks very good on the truck. Sure is a lot better to hook up the trailer than the stock tailgate.

I found the side panels fit poorly and required trimming just to make them fit. The quality overall is subpar, I’ll be lucky if this tailgate lasts a year. Not recommended by me but it doesn’t look too bad once it’s installed

It’s been a year now and I am still very happy with my Stromberg tailgate. The quality has shown through and it still looks excellent and functions as well as the day I installed it.
