Today were going to take a quick look at the Bulldog Collar Lock Coupler with high profile latch part number bd028382. Now Bulldog covers this coupler with a limited five year warranty. It has a gross trailer weight capacity of 5,000 pounds. Its a weld on design so youll fit it over the tongue of your trailer and weld along the edges. Its designed to work with three inch wide trailer tongues. Well take a measurement of our inside width here and we get our three inches.
Overall the coupler has the length of about 16 and a quarter inches. Its designed to work with two inch hitch balls. Next were going to show you how the mechanism itself works. Theres a securing pin here that youll need to remove in order to open the latch. The holes line up here and when the pins inserted it prevents the latch from coming up.
You can also replace this pin with a coupler lock. The coupler uses a captive system where this jaw hinges around and fits around the ball. The collar slides back this jaw will open up freeing the ball. To do that well lift the latch and as we lift the latch itll pull the collar back and release the jaw. The jaw is spring loaded so itll come open on its own.
To close it hold the jaw down and close the latch. Now weve got a two inch trailer ball with us so we can show you how the whole system works with the ball. Well pull the latch open. The jaw opens. Well fit the coupler over our ball and then we can close the jaw and the collar over it.

Have been using two of these hitches for a year now, have been very good and strong for our heavy equipment. Only recommendations is to keep sleeve greased to help with daily usage / removal.

Five star service from etrailer, and maybe a two or three-star product from Bulldog. Aside from the rust and the fact that the collar is so stiff that it can't be operated by hand, the fabrication on the steel attachment plate is poor. The holes for the tongue jack are punched out, twice in some cases, resulting in an enlarged hole, but there are no threads for the tongue jack so you'll have to fumble around and use nuts underneath. The vertical angles on the steel are wrong, so it will splay out at the bottom and won't fit tightly to the A-frame and you will need to shim it out. The interior of the casting is full of weld spatter that will chafe the tow ball. I bought the less-expensive Ram sleeve-lock coupler under a Curt label and the fabrication is much better, having none of the problems the BullDog did. etrailer kindly sent me an RMA to return the BullDog.
The best coupler we have used for our construction business. I have been using these for 14 years now without any problems. We replace them every 5 years at about 160,000 miles when we purchase new trailers. I currently need three now but they have been out of stock for several months. Still waiting for new stock to arrive so I can order. I feel safe with this type coupler and my employees also like the security it provides.
Don’t buy this!!! It literally does not work. You can’t open the coupling because it was built incorrectly. There isn’t enough room to slide the coupling back. Of course I didn’t realize this until I had mounted it on my trailer. etrailer customer service is about to get an earful!
The Bulldog coupler is SO MUCH easier to hitch up and disengage than my previous coupler which required several back and forth movements of my tow vehicle to engage/disengage the hitch ball.

Heavy duty, clean - no bulk to deal with and can step on the tongue easily to climb up, etc. Perfect for up to 7K# trailer. When it is latched, it is latched and in the truck and away you go! Great Bulldog product.
Really fast shipping, install only took 15 min, and much more solid than the original coupler on the trailer that used two long bolts (which wore and caused the holes to get oblong making the connection to the trailer sloppy), as compared to the four bolts provided with the new coupler.
