Hi, Matt with etrailer. Today we're gonna be talking about the Yakima roof rack system on the 2023 Ford Expedition Max. What's great about a roof rack system is it's gonna allow you to carry a lot more items even when you have a larger vehicle like this. In some cases, maybe you got a lot of things in the back or the items that you wanna carry are just too long or just too dirty to put in here. This is gonna give you the ability to accommodate a lot more gear and other accessories. Now the roof rack system we have today is gonna be comprised of two parts.
We're gonna have these JetStream crossbars on top and we're gonna have these TimberLine towers on the bottom and you're gonna be able to put on anything that's a T-track accessory or a clamp accessory. Now keep in mind that when you are putting on any clamp accessories, you're gonna have to have enough room for it to fit under here and not hit your roof. Our crossbar's also gonna be 60 inches long and they're gonna be constructed from aluminum with a black powder coat finish so they're gonna be very weather resistant. Along with that, they're also gonna have this channel on top so you can put any T-track accessories up here. And what I really do like about it is it has this built-in weather strip.
So like on some other crossbars, you might have a weather strip that's on top that you might have to cut down the size. This one, you don't have to cut anything, it's gonna be built in and just gonna plug right in there. That weather strip's also gonna help provide any like prevention of any debris or water getting in there. And it's gonna help reduce wind noise. We're also gonna have this channel on the bottom and this bottom channel is just gonna be used to put any of your towers onto it.
We're also gonna have this end cap on the very back of it. And if you take a closer look at this end cap, you'll notice it has this hole right here. You can actually go into our website and actually get a lock core to get put in here just for some additional security. And if you notice in here, we're gonna have the strap that attaches to the interior and it's gonna go all the way around to the back. And speaking of how much space we have beneath our crossbar, we're gonna have just about from the top of our roof to the bottom of our crossbar about three inches.
So if you have any accessories with any clamps that are within that range, you're gonna be good. Now for the top of our roof to the top of our crossbar that is gonna be a total of four inches. So that's just something to keep in mind if you're going through any low clearance areas. Now that's not too high, but if you put any taller accessories on there, that's just something to be mindful. As for how they're gonna sit on the side of our vehicle they're gonna sit pretty flush with our vehicle. There's not gonna be too much room on the back end either. So if you have any accessories that you wanna put on the very end of these, you're probably not gonna have enough room to set 'em on right here. When we start installation, I just recommend laying everything out so we can have an eye on everything. So we're gonna have our JetStream crossbars that are 60 inches long and we're gonna have our towers. Along with that, we're gonna have our end caps to our towers. You're gonna have this included Allen key to help you put everything together and I'd recommend getting a tape measure to help measure everything out. We already have one of our crossbars installed but installing the other side is gonna be the exact same process. So what we're gonna start with is just grabbing our crossbar and flipping that over. And you're gonna see we have this channel open. That's how you know it's gonna be on the right side. And it's also gonna have this ruler on the bottom. To start off with, I'm just gonna remove these end caps. You may have to pull up on it a little bit, it'll slide right off. And we can slide both our towers on through this channel. We're gonna make sure this bolt is facing outside rather than inside on our crossbars just sliding that metal plate through that channel. Once you do that, you can push it over the way down to the rest right about there and just take your second one and face it the opposite way, just sliding that plate through the channel so it's all the way on there and just leaving it right about there. And all we have to do is just put this end cap back on. Now when you're tightening this down, you wanna make sure everything's in the right locations so I'd recommend just putting it up there, making sure everything's gonna fit right and getting those measurements down. Now we've already done that with our first crossbar so we just had to take through the same measurements and apply 'em here. So I'm just gonna double check everything's in the right spot. If I need to do any adjusting, I can. And with that adjusted, I can tighten it down to our crossbar. All I have to do is move the strap out of my way and push the strap in so I can see this bolt in there and tighten that down. This is gonna be great because when we are putting it up there it's gonna stay in place. It's not gonna slide around when we're trying to set it up there. Once we have this side tightened down, you can come over to the side of it and tighten this down as well. The second bolt here is also gonna be applying pressure to this tower to our crossbar but this one's gonna be a lot easier to access just in case you get any wrong measurements and you need to adjust anything when it's up there. And with both sides tightened down, I'd also recommend just measuring out what you want your crossbar spread to be and that's just gonna depend on what accessories you have. Now, after when you've done that, you can take your crossbar and flip it over and we wanna make sure this fatter side is facing the front of our vehicle and we can put it on up there. And I'd recommend if you do have any issues with this they get a friend that kind of help you put it on there. And before we cinch this down completely I'd recommend just measuring both sides and make sure that you're gonna be even. So you're gonna have the same crossbar spread on either side. After when you've done that, you just have to grab the strap and hook it into these hooks. And to do that, what's gonna help you is just pushing in this bolt and it's gonna push the back of the strap out some more, giving you a little bit more strap to use. You're gonna have these two pegs on either side. They're gonna slide right into those hooks, securing them down and they might want to try to pop out a little bit. That's just gonna be a good time just to tighten this down the rest of the way. Now I will note when tightening this down this is going to be a little bit longer because this is a long strap. So it might take you a few turns to cinch it down. And one of our last steps is just taking this end cap and putting it on our towers. All you have to do is line up these two prongs on the back of it with these two holes. Now when I'm putting it on there I just gotta line them up and then after they're lined up, it's just gonna click right into place. After when you do that I'd encourage you just to do a shake test, make sure everything feels secured. And it does. So after that, you can take for a ride. That'll just be a look at the install and a look at some of the features of the Yakima Roof Rack System on the 2023 Ford Expedition Max.

These multipurpose, galvanized steel crossbars supply the backbone for your aftermarket roof rack system. Works with accessories that clamp around the bars. Pair with Yakima towers, fit kit, and RoundBar SL Adapter to create a complete roof rack.Kimberly has shown that great customer service is not dead! etrailer and Kimberly are great to work with and have earned my business and will always be the 1st and last place I look for my rack+ needs!
As for the application, I needed more space to fit my cargo box on top of my 4Runner TRD Pro’s rack. I came up this this… Thank you!
Free delivery that showed up in 3 days!!! Can't beat it. The crossbars with the Control Towers and LandingPad 9 fit perfectly on my Honda Element. Had them installed in about 30 mins. Don't have my cargo box yet and wanted to test strength, so I had my 110lb wife standing on them with no issues (yes, the car was parked). Plan to take a long camping trip next week with a cargo box on top...wife will be in the vehicle:-)
Works perfectly. I am always impressed that Yakima continues to make parts for the "old roundbars" since they have since moved on to the superior JetStream bars.
Excellent selection of rack parts. Very useful installation videos help when choosing between products. Easy ordering process. Quick delivery.
necessary for using the widest cross bar option (78"). East to install
A great company to do business with, and lots of merchandise in stock. I orderd a roof rack for my truck on Tuesday morning and it was on the porch when I returned from work on Thursday. I will deffinitely order more from etrailer.com
Really Easy to Install! Solid and Strong amount to Roof Rack.
The rack has been so useful since I purchased it. Staff at etrailer.com were exceptionally helpful in getting the best option for my car and answering questions. I recommend this company, for its 110% customer service, excellent prices and timely delivery.
One quick phone call and Gwendolyn figured out exactly what I needed for our new car to use my old Yakima rack.
Great first experience dealing with you guys! Shipped fast, and was a faster install. You gave me the right parts and it went together in a flash.
Will definitely be doing business with you all again.
I have been using Yakima racks for around 40 years and have never had any problems. However, I am amazed at the price increases over the years. Etrailer prices were by far lower than most. Overall, a very excellent purchase.
Kit worked perfectly on my 2021 Subaru Forester. The whole install took 30 minutes. Never been disappointed with etrailer.
Haven’t used them yet but they should work as expected
I'm happy that this allows me to save money by using my old round bars on my new vehicle, with only the purchase of new "towers" and these adapters.
An Excellent Roof Rack!
first try was missing what was needed
Etrailer helped. It was great!
E trailer has me me spoiled yet again! If only I could expect this level of service from other suppliers.
Works great to use my round bars on the Skyline towers.
Yakima Crossbars were as you would expect - steel bars coated in a soft black coating (be mindful when you are utilizing these with the top mounts as the clamp will eat through the soft coating when you tighten them down). I had issues with my yakima round bar setup as the brackets and tower system were allowing water to leak in. This is in no way reflective of what youll experience but Yakima has superb support. I spoke with them twice on my issue and out of their kindness they shipped me an entire setup to replace my existing one for free.
Product works as advertised thus far. When you buy the yakima towers, you are required to purchase these as well to fit the rounder bars (I feel sure there are other adapters for other bar shapes). These should have come with the towers in my opinion, and I resented having to shell out more $$ to purchase these "must have" adapters to mount my bars. 3 star overall rating based on function, price. Delivery and packaging was top-notch through etrailer.
I ordered a Yakima Roof Rack for my Toyota Prius from eTrailer.com. Part of the reason for purchasing from eTrailer.com was the promise that the racks were made specifically for the car and would not dent the roof.
I received the rack on July 31, and installed the racks on my Prius according to instructions included with the racks. Our tandem kayak is 65 lbs . The towers were placed on the outer most part of the roof as indicated by the instructions. Yakima saddles were attached to the crossbars to hold the kayak. Nothing was close or touching the top of the roof. We transported the kayak to a nearby lake, 6 miles, and back. The next day we removed the racks from the roof and noticed 4 dents on the top of the roof. It was obvious that transporting the kayak on the rack caused the dents.
We had to pay $100 to have the dents removed from the Prius roof.
I cannot continue to use this rack that puts dents in the car's roof. I was extremely disappointed in the racks. In reading the Toyota manual and contacting them by phone, there is no mention of using or not using roof racks.
I was shocked to learn from Rachel at eTrailer.com that your company takes absolutely no responsibility for this Yakima product they sell. The best they can do is to pass the buck and refer us to Yakima.
Very disappointed, and out a lot of money for a product that damages your car. Will not recommend or buy here again. eTrailer.com does not even deserve one star in this review.
Typical Yakima cross bars. Coating is a little too easy to cut or gouge, but probably needs to be that way to get the grip it provides. Good enough solution for me, and allows me to continue to use all the attachments I've accumulated over the years that require a round bar
Great product. Great service.
Roof rack parts were ordered correctly and shipped quickly.
Installation of the hitch, wiring, rear bike rack, and new roof rack towers went well. I didn't set any speed records, but I was more concerned with doing no damage on a new 2019 Toyota Sienna AWD van. The hitch fit up well per instructions except that I was able to work around the exhaust without lowering it. Underbody panel and rear fascia did both need to be removed. Very happy with the end result. The new van is now set up to haul the bikes and canoes and move my log splitter.
