When replacing gas shock on your vehicle or RV, you will want to make sure you are buying a replacement with the exact same extended length, compressed length, and pounds of force. This information is usually printed on the shock. Lengths are measured from the center of the ball joint used for mounting. If you are planning on installing gas shocks on something for the first time, identifying the shock you need requires fairly complex initial calculations, so be sure to do your research to avoid purchasing a shock that will not fit your application.

Video Transcript for Review of JR Products RV Doors - 372-5100-30

Today, we're going to take a look at the JR Products, 12 inch long gas shock. Now, this is a quick and easy replacement for any worn or broken gas shock you may have. This'll replace the gas shock on multiple applications like your RV or trailer doors, storage compartment doors, truck bed covers, or even fold down camper beds. This shock is designed with a nice high quality black nitride shaft. It includes plastic ends on each end with locking clips to secure it to the mounting ball. The connection type on this shock is a 10 millimeter ball socket.

In other words, this socket will pop right onto a 10 millimeter ball socket and it installs easily in minutes. There's no special tools required. All you'll need is a small flat tip screwdriver. What you'll want to do when you go to remove your old one. Let me just zoom in a little bit so you can see better, but I'll show you here. It's the same on each end, but when you go to remove your old one, you'll take your flat tip screwdriver, put it under that clip, pry it up.

That clip will pop out and then you can take that end off. You'll do the same on the other end. When you go to put the new one on, what you'll do is put the screwdriver under, raise that clip. Again, you don't want to remove it, you just want to pop it up enough to release the pressure in there. Pop that onto your 10 millimeter ball, push that clip back down and it'll secure it in place.

Again, you'll do the same on the other end. Now, when you do install this, you want this inner rod right here facing down, and it is also recommended to replace these gas shocks in pairs. A few measurements on this, the extended length like it is now is measured from the center of the socket to the center of the other one. If we put a ruler on that, center to center is 12 inches. The compressed length, so when the shock is compressed, is 7.91 inches. The output force on this shock is 30 pounds.

That should do it for the review on the JR Products 12 inch long gas shock.

The shocks and new hinges I’d ordered earlier were the answer to getting my 1999 Yakima Rocket Box back into service. The hinges were an exact fit.

I hate to see a blank review. Can you give me more details on your experience with the shock? I would like to help.

Yes Jenny I received the wrong gas cylinder. They were to short and the wrong I got 40 lbs should of been 10

I am happy to see if we have the one that you need. The shock that was ordered has 30 pounds of force, is 12 inches extended and 7.91 inches compressed. What is the size that you need? It sounds like you need 10 pounds of force. Does it still need to measure 12 inches extended and 7.91 inches compressed?

Jenny The gas cylinder is 20 extended and 11 retracted. Signature is the brand pn # sx20p1-11-dc

We do not carry that particular brand however I do have a shock that measures 20 inches extended, 11.41 inches retracted with 10 pounds of force, part # 372-5300-10. If you have not installed the previous shock, I can have our Customer Service team send return instructions to you.

The selection process was easy to follow. I needed gas struts with a greater lift capacity for our under bed storage due to the addition of a memory foam mattress. I was able to select a strut pair with the proper length and extension from the website. The struts were received quickly and were exactly what I needed. The bed now raises gently and remains elevated.

by:

When my package arrived it was beat up and one of the clips on the end of the shock was missing, not what I would give a good report !!

by:

Item was exactly as advertised, easy installation, fits perfectly on our RV door. Our previous gas shock was worn out & would not hold the door open. This product is sturdy & stable. It fixed the issue.

by:

This strut did not fit precisely due to the thickness of the end connectors. They are thicker than the original strut and since the strut has to fit between the bottom of the door and the threshold in the closed position it would not allow the door to close. I found that by exchanging the end connectors with the original strut I was able to install the strut and close the door. The only problem with this solution is that the new strut with the old connectors is slightly longer than the old strut/connector assembly and now allows the door to open slightly farther than before. Our awning arm just barely clears the door when opening and closing so will have to be very careful from now on when extending and retracting the awning. Our motorhome is a Sunseeker 3010ds model in case this is helpful to others ordering this product.

by:

Product is installed but instructions were a bit vague and difficult to implement(related to the removal of previous gas shock bar).

by:

Exactly what I needed for my Kwik Kamp motorcycle trailer! It's nice to share information in our group when we find parts to use for our discontinued campers.

by:

Thanks, now my tool box won't cut my arm off.

by:

product works well, shipping took a little longer than I expected

by:

Very fast delivery! I've ordered from e-trailer several times and service has always been great!

by:

These work great for toolbox lid

by:

The head that attached to the bottom door jamb was way to huge couldn't close the door I was able to switch the one from the old strut the thread size not the same I had to force it on most likely will pull off I ordered the 30 pound for my fifth wheel door if people ask the 20 pound model is the correct size but I chose the 30 pound my mistake

by:

Price is right and product fit and functioned well for my application on a Leer truck topper rear glass door

by:

Works great haven't had any problems with it, would buy again if I ever needed it

by:

This fit my 05 Bigfoot 9.6 camper door with about 3/8 compression left. This is the shock you want. It has a slow open feature and does not slam the door open possibly risking tearing the mounts off. So no worries about people who just open the door and head out. We used to have to coax the door open. Not you can let go of it. Love this shock!!

by:

Exactly what I needed delivered in a timely manner

by:

The Stabilus shock holding the 22" door of our bumper pull trailer open was weak. Mild wind would push it shut. This shock fit right onto the existing ball joints. A small blade screwdriver pried the "c" clip back, allowing me to slip the socket over the ball, and the clip snapped into place. Maybe 30 seconds and the shock was installed.

The biggest challenge was determining what force I needed in the replacement. The existing shock had the model information scraped away where it rubbed on the door threshold. No where could I find on the etrailer site what force a small door shock should be. I ended up chatting with an RV service tech I know, who looked it up in his parts catalog. Turns out 10 lb force is standard except for large RV doors. I would suggest etrailer.com add this information on their online catalog. Maybe it's there and I couldn’t' find it? "Gas shock force needed for RV doors."

by:

Product was damaged and not received, but etrailer stepped up and sent another gas prop. More companies should have these work ethic’s. Good job

by:

fit and worked great

by:

This item was not an exact fit but it was very close and it worked. My thanks to Josh for his help and time he spent with me to figure it out. The difficulty was there was no part number or part to use or measure. Josh was working in the blind and lucky for me it worked.

by:

Great customer service and prompt delivery.
I haven't installed them yet but look to be the exact replacement part for the current ones in my camper.
