Recommended Wheels To Change From 16 to 17.5 on 15k PJ Trailer

Question:

I currently have a 15k trailer with 8 lug 16inch wheels. I want to go to 17.5 wheels and tires. will the 5/8inch studs fit my 9/16 stud holes? Or do I need all new hubs? Thanks Matt

There are a few options but the Westlake 215/75R17.5 Radial Tire w 17-1/2" Lynx Aluminum Wheel # LHAS701 will not fit the 5/8" studs on your trailer.

You can change your hubs to ones with a 9/16" studs to use these wheels. To do this I would need the bearing numbers from the inner and outer bearing of your current hubs to make sure you get the correct hub. If the bearing numbers are worn you can use the attached diagram to measure your spindle with digital calipers like # PTW80157 to find out the correct inner and outer bearings.

The other option is to use a different wheel that is built for 5/8" studs like the Provider 215/75R17.5 Radial Tire w/ 17-1/2" Silver Mod Wheel - Offset # TA95ZR which has the same Load Range H rating of 4805lbs at 123 PSI but will work with you current 5/8" studs.

If you need replacement 5/8" flange lug nuts you can use # LI84FR.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you are increasing your overall tire height you may run into clearance issues with your fenders. I would recommend staying as close to your current overall tire height as possible to avoid clearance issues. The 215/75R17.5 you were looking at has an overall height of 30.2".

I included a video for the Westlake 215/75R17.5 Radial Tire w 17-1/2" Lynx Aluminum Wheel # LHAS701 for you to take a look at.
