Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit Installation - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Today on this 2002 Jeep Liberty we're going to install part number RM-155 from Roadmaster. This is Roadmaster taillight wiring kit with bulbs. First thing we need to do is go ahead remove the taillights from the vehicle. There's two torx head bolts that we have to remove. We use a T20 torx head bit to remove the bolts. There's a couple attachment pins here and here.

Using a wide bar, in this case a plastic prybar, we can go ahead and pop it loose. We can disconnect the wiring from the light. We'll go ahead and unlock it first. Press down on this tab to go ahead and pull it away. Then we work this loose from the clip here. We've got our passenger's side done, let's go ahead and do the same thing on the driver's side.

To do the driver's side, it's good to have an extension onto your bit routed from the door into the screws behind the light. Now we're going to install our bulb and socket at the bottom location right here. So it'll line up this part of the lens. There's no bulb there so we'll go ahead and use that. First we'll go ahead and put in a 1/4" pilot hole. Then we'll follow it up with a 1" hole saw bit.

We'll go ahead and install our bulb and socket. Yes, it's going to be a tight fit, but it goes straight in and pushes through. Now you spread these guys out so it gets a grip on the housing here. Take a flat blade screwdriver and just kind of raise it up just a little bit and do this for each one all the way around. When we'll test it and make sure the prongs are opened up enough.

If you're satisfied with that then you can go ahead and just push it into place. Next we'll go ahead and seal all this up and all the open holes with some silicone. Let's go ahead and repeat it on the driver's side. It's a little bit different shape but it's going to be in the same location. For working on the right hand side, or on the passenger's side taillight, go ahead and strip the wires. We'll go ahead and add our butt connectors now. Now we'll add our larger butt connectors to these wires when we make our connection to our four-pole wire harness that will run to the front of the vehicle. Now this wire harness that will run from the front to the rear has two four-pole ends on it. Now we only need one up by the front of the vehicle so we're just going to cut off the other end and maybe save the cap but the rest of it's history. Let's go ahead and install our wire harness. Okay, we're going to start over on the passenger's side of the vehicle and take our four-pole end that will go to the front. We're just going to drop this through between the bumper cover and the bodywork. We'll go ahead and pull it out the bottom. We're going to split our wires back a little bit to give us some working room. Now on the passenger's side, we'll need our ground, our running light signal and our right turn signal and brake, which will be a green. Our yellow one doesn't need to be used on this side so you can go ahead and cut this guy short. Go ahead and strip our wires and we'll go ahead and add our wires from our taillight to this. Maybe a little more than the factory length. We'll go ahead and add a zip tie to it and hold it in place. Let's go ahead and hook up our wires, our running light circuit is going to be brown, and on our bulb and socket will also be brown. Our right turn signal and our break signal will be green and that will go to red on our bulb and socket. White's going to be ground so we'll hook that up to the black wire. As our connections are made, we'll go ahead and use some electrical tape to help give a little extra protection and we can go ahead and re-install the taillight. Put the factory connection back in, make sure it locks back in place. We'll also put our clip back in here. Tuck the wires back in and re-install the light. Let's go ahead and route our four-pole over to our driver's side. I think in this case we're just going to follow the top of the hitch and zip tie along the hitch. Along here you want to make sure you stay away from the exhaust as well. Now the zip ties that come with the kit aren't going to be long enough. It's a good idea to get yourself some extra long zip ties to wrap around the hitch. Now, we're going to need to pull this wire back up to here. To do that, we're going to use a piece of airline tubing that we can wrap down. This also going to be a piece that can hold its shape as well. Let's go ahead and split our wires. Now since we're on the driver's side, we won't need the green wire, so let's just fold that back and out of the way. So we've got our ground, our running light circuit, and our left turn and brake lights. Let's go ahead and hook these guys up. We'll do the easy one first. Look for a yellow wire for left turn signal. Make sure which end goes toward the front so it's this side. This half of the yellow wire is going to the other side. We don't need it so we'll cut it short. Now we'll go to our turn signal circuit which is red on our bulb and socket. We'll go ahead and add our butt connectors now. Using the larger yellow one we'll go ahead and pull the wire over to give it a little more grip. Next we'll work for our brown wire for running lights. That will need to go to both sides, so we'll cut this wire in half. Strip both sides and put a butt connector to join them again and that will be our junction. And that will go to our brown wire to our bulb and socket. Now, I'm going to do the same thing with the white wire for ground. When the vehicle is being towed, the ground is being supplied by the towing vehicle. However, it's always a good idea to have a ground from here to go to the bodywork as well on the vehicle because it might get a ground from the tow bar as well. I'm going to vary it a little bit because I'm going to use a little piece of white wire to run from here to the sheet metal. You can also peel back a little bit more and pull off a chunk and do it that way as well. We'll connect our ground from our bulb and socket to our white wire extension ground. Go ahead and cut off our extra length and we'll attach the ring terminal that comes with the kit. We're going to use a self tapping screw a number 8 size that uses a 1/4" nut driver. Once again we'll use some electrical tape to help protect our butt connectors. Tuck the wires back in. Let's go ahead and add a zip tie to our wires. We'll go ahead and re-install this taillight. Now it just a matter of running our four-pole wire up towards the front. When we do that we'll stay away from anything moving like suspension components or anything hot like the exhaust. When we get to the front of the vehicle we're going to go into the engine compartment a little bit and then back down to our bumper. We'll go ahead and follow our path and how we did it, we went ahead and went back up over the hitch alongside the gas tank. Zip tied anything that we could that was secure. Went over some brackets and basically followed these lines going up to the engine compartment. We zip tied in approximately the same places where the lines we're mounted. You can see the straight line going up. That uses the same wire pull trick as before, we'll go ahead and pull our wire up. Make sure it's pulled up away from the exhaust and then we'll route the way we want it, we'll come around the battery and then back down. Because then eventually there will be an upgrade to the supplemental braking system on here so we need easy access to our wires. There's an extra loop in here so we'll go ahead and zip tie and secure it. Then we'll go ahead and route our four-pole wire to the bumper. Straight back down, move to the front here and we're just going to skitter on over to the center here and zip tie it for safe keeping. Let's go ahead and put our cover back into place. It's easier to pull through without the cover. It's a length that we can easily get to and we'll zip tie the rest to our base plate. If you take this and just tuck it between the plastic and the base plate, it'll stay in place there. Everything is installed let's go ahead and apply power and check it out. Running lights, right turn, left turn. Okay everything working that will finish it for install of part number RM-155 on our 2002 Jeep Liberty. .

Put this into a 2002 Jeep Liberty. Good directions. Drilled out the lower part of tail light housing and install bulb sockets into it. You may have to deburr the tail light housing a bit and manipulate the tangs on the bulb socket but is fine. I put in 1157 LED bulbs :) Good stuff!

This product was easy to install but it took some time routing the wiring harness from the front bumper to the rear. Pick up some extra zip ties, you will need several. The lighting system is independent allowing for the use of LED bulbs. Great product.

Found this item was wired with the brake lights for the brown wires and turn/running lights for colored wires and this fact kept me from getting this done very rapidly. Once identified, went together really nicely and actually grounded to frame for higher light output. I upgraded 3 wire into 2 wire converter with "Roadmaster Brite-lite 3 to 2 Wiring Converter" and they are as bright as the lights already in the housing. Except for that wiring issue, it would have been excellent. As to performance after install, great. Customer service was nice from Roadmaster as well. Did receive a call back message from etrailer a couple days later.

I like this product and would definitely buy it again. I like not having to splice into the vehicle wiring and install diodes, etc. It is a clean installation with good instructions. All I have to do to hook up the lights is raise the hood of the towed car and pull out the pigtail and hook it to the motorhome. It is powered by the motorhome and does not run down the battery in the towed car. Great product.

Good instructions. Everything need is included for 4flat connections. One bulb socket arrived with the ground (black) wire loose in the bag. The solder joint had failed. Resoldered but had to remove the other wires and rubber insert from the bulb socket to avoid melting. Not a shining example for Roadmaster.

I really didn't want to install a separate bulb kit but our Equinox light was not compatible with our motor home. I was also installing a trailer lighting harness for the Equinox at the same time and doing them together made a lot of sense. I found this kit to be easy to manage and that drilling into the rear light housings not nearly as difficult as I had imagined. I would share a picture of the result but fortunately there is nothing to see - everything fit right into the Equinox's rear lamp structure. I compared the original lights with those from the kit driven by the RV and found them to be a great match. I upgraded the kit bulbs to LEDs for greater longevity.

I purchased this wiring kit for use in my 1999 Mazda Miata.
I did not want to cut into the OEM wiring harness, even using the diode method to safeguard the system. I felt that the fully separate wiring harness was more to my way of thinking for getting my car ready to tow.

I did not follow the included instructions that said to run the flat 4 wiring beneath the car, zip tying it along the way free of the exhaust and moving parts. I ran it through the firewall, beneath the dash, under the center console, and under the carpeting back into the trunk area. I then installed the bulb holders as instructed in my OEM Miata taillight fixtures.
I am happy to have all the wiring up and out of the way of potential road hazard damage, as well as the hot and/or moving parts beneath the car.

It works perfectly, and I am glad that I purchased this kit, and also that I decided to install it the way I felt best to do so.
It took much longer my way, but I'll never have to mess with it again.
