Parts to Flat Tow 2016 Kia Soul Manual Transmission

Question:

I have a Curt adjustable width arm tow bar that I used with a previous tow vehicle. Is it possible to use the Curt with one of the base plates you sell for for the Kia? I assume Ill need adapter for whichever base plate you recommend.

We can help you with each of the items needed for safe and legal flat towing of your 2016 Kia Soul with manual transmission but we have no way to safely enable use of your Curt tow bar.

The items needed to flat tow are outlined in the linked article and they include the tow bar and base plates, safety cables, a wiring or lighting solution of one kind or another, a supplemental braking system and usually a high/low hitch adapter to keep the connected tow bar level.

For price and fit I recommend Roadmaster's Direct-Connect base plate # RM-522114-5 which you can use with a motorhome-mount tow bar like their Falcon 2, part # RM-520. This avoids the need for adapters which add both cost and complexity to your setup. You can also use their safety cable set # RM-643; their coiled design helps prevent them from dragging on the ground.

For wiring/lighting there are several types of kits to consider, including inexpensive and easy install magnetic lights like # TL21RK which I like, diode kits like # RM-15267 and bulb kits like # RM-155. The linked article will help you determine which you'll prefer from the included page that shows all options.

For a braking system you again have a choice, a portable system like the Roadmaster Even Brake # RM-9400 that you can take with you to use in your next towed car, or permanent-install kits like the SMI Stay-in-Play # SM99251 which has a complex installation but you only have to do it once. If you plan on keeping your RV longer than your towed car then the portable systems are the way to go. I like these just for their easier non-invasive installation.

High-low hitch adapters are detailed in the linked article which explains how to select the right one.

The only Curt adjustable tow bar we offer is item # C19745 which is intended for use without base plates, and on a vehicle whose bumper can provide the strength necessary for towing it in that manner. The RV also needs to have a hitch with 2-inch hitch ball in order to use this coupler-style tow bar. The trouble is that for this entry-level Curt tow bar no makers offer an adapter. It might be possible to have something fabricated but for safety reasons I cannot recommend this. My tech contact at Curt knew of no such adapter and also discouraged this idea.
