Recommended Parts to Flat Tow a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with Aftermarket D Ring Mounts
Question:
I am new to jeeps and flat towing. Please tell me what you recommend. Tow bar, lights, brake system. The jeep has an aftermarket front bumper with 7/8 in D ring mounts. I would prefer not to have brake buddy to have to setup. The tail lights on the jeep are aftermarket LED. Tiffin Phaeton diesel pulling a 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited manual. Thanks for your time.

To flat tow your 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited you will need a Tow Bar, Safety Cables, a Base Plate Kit, Lighting, a Supplemental Braking System, and possibly a High-Low adapter.
For a tow bar I recommend going with the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520. This tow bar has a weight rating of 6,000 lbs and features arms that adjust individually for easy hook up and disconnect. Safety Cables that go great with this tow bar and are also rated for 6,000 lbs are the Roadmaster part # RM-643 which are coiled to help keep them from dragging on the ground.
Since you have the D ring mounts you will need an adapter instead of a base plate kit. You will want to use either the Roadmaster Adapters part # RM-035 or part # RM-035-1 which fit both 7/8 inch and 1 inch diameter holes that are used for D rings. Part # RM-035 will attach to 3/4 inch thick shackle mounts and part # RM-035-1 will attach to 1 inch thick shackle mounts.
For lighting I recommend the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs # RM-155. This kit bypasses your Jeep's electrical system so you will not have to worry about it messing anything up. We have a video of this kit being installed on a similar 2012 Unlimited that I have linked for you.
Since most states now require a supplemental braking system be installed for flat towing we recommend using one with any flat towing setup. The best for a diesel coach with air brakes is the Air Force One # SM99243. Using a system designed specifically for air brakes prevents false braking on your Jeep. You will need to install the Brake Relay Kit # RM-88400 as well.
To keep your flat towing setup level you might need to use a high-low adapter as well. I have linked our selection of adapters for you to choose from as well.
